You can see if you zoom in that the anti drain back gasket actually shriveled up. It was stiff and brittle. It felt like a light cheap plastic and was borderline brittle
I dunno how silicone becomes like that but it was on for 40k miles and a couple years or so. Was in my buddies transmission cooler line. Maybe the valvoline atf is bad for silicone??
The can felt a little then to me compared to a k&N I cut open on the same day.
The media seemed great. Was very soft material over a wire mesh and was strong. Didn’t tear easy. Was hard to get the wire mesh apart from the caps.
I cut the filter open with a saws all so not pretty. The filter media material is the only American made part of the filter and it was assembled in China.

Premium guard
Ahhhh, OK. Yeah, they are a reseller of Asian-sourced products with US distribution according to their website:

Previously, they were International Distributors USA Inc.

Their head office is a suite in this building, 90 Broad Street Suite 1504 New York, NY 10004 United States:

Basically an offshore manufacturing middleman is my take.

I don't know about this specific filter application or it's specific use (cooler line) in this case.

That said, there's been a fair number of anecdotes of Premium Guard OF posted and discussed on this subforum. I'm referring specifically to ones used as 'engine oil filters'. In my observation, they have been generally well thought of and post use anecdotes have looked fine/good. Also, their ISO efficiency rating has been very respectable. Before recent changes at AZ, the STP XL has been accepted as a PG OF by another name. The 9688 PG application has been often posted and looked good.

One member, @bbhero, is quite familiar with Premium Guard OFs and based on purchase and use likely knows more than me. Also, 53 has c&p'd quite a few here.

Honestly, I can't tell much about topic filter from the pics. However, I'm not willing to condemn the entire PG OF filter line based on one 'other than' engine oil filter use anecdote. As reference, I've never used a PG OF, not to say I'd rule out their use.

What could possibly go wrong?

Is it an illusion, or can you actually see the center tube THROUGH the media? That looks ridiculously thin. Or maybe that’s the mesh without the media? I actually like micro glass filters for ATF filters-OG Ultras or HPG/MPG Baldwins, and the ADBV basically does nothing in an ATF application anyway.

It is being used as an ATF filter, not an oil filter. Premium Guard does say the ADBV is nitrile, not silicone, in their description. Pretty chrome plating, though!
That would explain some of the condition of the ADBV if it is indeed not silicone but it was clearly disfigured almost like the one side melted. I’ll see if I took a pic of it outside the can.
The thin can doesn’t seem like a big deal to me. It felt strong enough with the chrome lining. I think he made a good choice in that it wasn’t going to rust anytime soon if ever. Even the baseplate was chrome.

Yes I had removed the media from the mesh in that pic.
The media itself was a really soft material but was strong In that it was hard to tear with my hands. It stayed perfectly in place it seems before I tore it off the backing.

Some pics of media off and the ADBV and gasket end. It had a thin layer that peeled off easily from the thicker part of the media but was fully intact before hand.
The gasket ring and ADBV feel like entirely different material so maybe the ADBV is actually nitrile or whatever. Pretty sure the gasket ring is silicone. Was very flexible
Wish I took more pics of it. It was certainly disfigured like shriveled up on one side and felt more like a pliable plastic

Looks like it did job. May I ask what ATF and filter went back on? Nice photos, and Thank You friend 🇺🇸🇨🇦🍻
