Hi,

Can using 5W-30 instead of the Hyundai recommended 5W-20 suddenly cause my Elantra to start burning oil a bit?

I have a 2017 Hyundai ELantra Value Edition with 87,925 miles on it. The car has been flawless with no issues at all, but recently decided to use
5W-30 instead of 5W-20. I know the manual says you can safely use either grade, but the oil cap says use 5W-20.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I've ran almost exclusively 5W-30 in my Elantra and it doesn't burn a drop. It's not the viscosity.

Well.... Hyundais last 100K mi, so you have 12,075 miles to go!
I'd probably change the oil at least one more time between now and then.
;)

Did switching viscosity cause oil to burn? No, it slowed it down a little if anything. What probably happened is the new oil dissolved some sludge, but are you stating that you're 100% sure the oil wasn't a little low already when you did the oil change?
