Oil for Honda 2.4L

I don't think you'll see any improvement by using a 10W30 over the recommended 5W20.Honda knows all about fuel dilution and it still see's no problem with 5W20 year round.

True....I'm now thinkin of using Redline 5w-20. I have 11 quarts of it.

What would ya'll chose, RL 5w-20 or M1 EP 10w-30? Tough decision. I have a supply of both.

I'd use that Mobil 1 10w-30 EP for the summer, get a Pepboys calendar and get that Mobil 1 0w-20 for half price and run it in the winter. Then you'll have receipts to cover any warranty issues.

(Well, I posted this before I saw that you had all that RedLine 5w20, **** . List all the oils you have, you're messing up my thought processes.)

Thats a good idea but I heard going back and forth between regular M1 and EP is resulting in some oil consumption problems.

Really? Is that credible? Or is that in the same league as "my engines sounds better" with this GF-4 5w30 than the other GF-4 5w30?

Going by the numbers:
code:

T(C) M1 10W30 * M1 0W20 * RL 5W20

-20° 3424.8 1712.7 2995.8

-10° 1332.9 730.8 1165.3

0° 595.7 352.8 521.4

10° 298.3 188.5 261.8

20° 164.1 109.5 144.5

30° 97.6 68.3 86.3

40° 62.0 45.1 55.0

50° 41.6 31.3 37.0

60° 29.2 22.6 26.1

70° 21.4 17.0 19.2

80° 16.1 13.1 14.5

90° 12.5 10.4 11.3

100° 10.0 8.4 9.1

HTHS 3.2 2.6 3.3

Well the HTHS between the M1 10w30 and the RL 5w20 is a wash as far as I'm concerned. If you look at viscosity the RL 5w20 is better suited for the winter months, that is, unless the M1 is better able to tolerate any water condensation issues. Flip a coin, and buy a case of the least expensive 5w20 dino you can find for warranty issues. Give it to charity.

I would follow Honda engineering recomendation rather my or anyone elses' "feelings". Honda recomendations are not subjective and have a bases backed up with data. Too many UOA demonstrate that a good 5w20 is a very good thing.

You have Redline 5W-20 and M1EP 10W-30 and felt the need to buy Havoline Syn?

Guess we can't get enough oil.

It'll work.

Subjective, but I once asked myself the question...if I have an engine that works well on a starburst oil, and I don't do extended drains, do I gain anything with Havoline Synthetic or Castrol Syntec, etc. over another Group II+ starburst like Pennzoil?? My conclusion was no.

Not trying to be argumentative, just my opinion.

So what is that buster, 22 quarts of oil? Enough for 4 changes and you haven't decided what to use yet? Sounds like you're well on your way to a BITOGaholic oil hoarding death spiral. By next year they'll be making a movie about it called "Leaving Titusville". Maybe they can get Brad Pitt to play the starring role of a guy named buster.

Tell me about it! I said I won't be switching brands. I have about 20 something quarts and still havn't made up my mind. I'd like to use the RL in the Focus pocus for a cleaning phase. I'll run 2 treatments of RL for 8k miles or so. For my car, the M1 or Havoline.

I just changed my son's Acura's oil. I put in 4 quarts of Havoline 5W-30 (GF-4/SM) and a quart of RL 5W-20. He puts on 2K miles a month so I'll change in about 5K miles. I sampled this time (dealer oil) and I'll sample again the next change. I'm pretty happy with Butler.

Just when I thought my choices were narrowed down, I picked up 6 quarts of the Havoline 10w-30 Synthetic for $4.18qt. I think this is going to be my oil.... .....for the moment.

I'm doing the oil change tomorrow. 5,500 miles on it. Factory was in for 4,000. Exxon SuperFlo for the last 1,500 for a rinse cycle. I know, it's overkill but that is what I chose.

So, it's either Havoline Synthetic 10w-30, M1 10-30 EP or RL 5w-20. Which one should I go with?

Probably 8k miles. I like the Havoline specs, but not many UOA's of the synthetic.

If you daily drive is 80mph constant for 40miles, I would choose the 10w30. I wouldnt be surprised the oil temp hits 110C at that speed, which would thin out the 10w30 to a nice 20wt.

I was thinking the same exact thing, which is why I'm going with 10w-30. They usually are less volatile. The Havoline is very tempting. TBN of 8.6 vs Mobil's 13.

My wife has a 2002 CRV-EX and I have a 2003 Accord LX which both have the same 2.4L engine and I have been using Schaeffers Supreme 5W-30 and 10W-30 with great UOA's. I will be going to the newer Schaeffer's 5w-20 this fall. This is a great oil for these Honda engines.

I would also recommend using the larger Japanese Honda filter still used by the S2000. I buy them 10 at a time and it only costs $5 each online.

M1 EP 10w-30 is in. Will do a 10k mile run. I have 5,500 miles on car. Went with this oil simply because I had it, can find it anywhere and think it will be very good for long drains with a TBN of 13. The Havoline is probably just as good and maybe even better with wear but I can find M1 at more places then any other oil. Gas stations, Target, Walmart, K-mart ......on and on.
