Oil for Honda 2.4L

I'll be doing an oil change on my uncles 2003 Accord 2.4 tomorrow. The car was bought in October of 2002 and so far he's driven a grand total of 16,100 miles.

He's had 2 oil changes so far at the dealer using (unknown brand) 5w20 conventional at 9K and 12K.

I've bought him Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and a PureOne filter. We'll be going for a full year on this oil/filter combo. In the upcoming year, he'll probably put on approx 5 to 8K miles so mileage is not a factor.

Hey Buster, don't you think the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 would give you better gas mileage, and better startup in the winter?

Hi, yes your right. I basically went with 10w30 for the summer months, but probably would have been better off with the 5w30. My observation, which could be completely wrong, is that the 10w's seem to be more stable and less volatile in most brand of synthetics. For instance the Havoline 5w30 Synthetic has a Noak of 10%, while the 10w30 has a 5%.

I'll finally be getting around to that oil change in the 2.4L Accord tomorrow.
Just curious...how much did you put in? The manual says 4.4 quarts for an oil change. But, my 1997 Accord 2.3L takes 4.75 and I find it hard to swallow that the new 2.4 takes less....

If you let all the oil drain out for about 15 minutes, it will take 5 quarts.

I think you made a wise viscosity selection Buster; I'd stick with it year round since you do mostly highway driving!

I agree with your choice also. Would like to see a used oil analysis at 10,000. I am guessing it will be great. I am thinking of using it in my accord for 12,000 mile changes. Maybe the 5w30 EP during the winter.

Thats a good idea. I might use it year round but if the timing works out, I'll use the 5w30 EP in the winter. I've seen some really good used oil analysis on here with Mobil 1 0w-20 in the Honda 2.4L. Car is extremely smooth with this oil.

Somewhat off topic - I have a 2001 Honda Civic LX 5 speed. I have always used 5w20 conventional since buying the car new. It is currently at 113,000 miles and runs as good as it ever has.
