Currently running Pennzoil ultra platinum 5w20 but couldn't help posting this question...would i be better off running a 5w30? I live in the northeast but after seeing some nice uoas (and price)on the magnatec 5w30 from castrol it has me thinking..any thoughts on the switch?

Just pick any API rated oil in the wt spec for your engine
Easy
Nothing you pick will be a bad choice.

I run 10w-30 diesel oil in everything that I own. 08 Edge and 13 F-150 Eco-Boost, 10 Mustang, 02 and 06 F-350 diesel pickups and all our big Ag tractors. Never have lost an engine in anything that we own. Non of it is synthetic. We run everything to the grave. The Edge has 172,000 miles and runs as good as the day it was new.

Running 5w30 will be fine, but not necessarily better than 5w20. If you like castrol, try it and let us know how ur truck likes it

I have a 2011 F150 with the 5.0. It currently has 120K miles. On my last oil change, I used Motorcraft 5W20 and a Motorcraft FL500 filter. Previous changes were bulk 5W20 and various filters. It did not like that oil, because I added at least 3+ quarts of makeup oil through a 5 or 6K mile rum. I changed the oil using Supertech Synthetic 5W30 and a FL500 filter. It has not used any oil in the last 1500 miles since the change. I'm not sure if it was the oil ST vs. MC or the viscosity, but im more at ease now!

Just an anecdote. In my old 2002 F150 it spec'd 5W20 but once the warranty was up I switched to 5W30 since it generally seemed more available.

Anyway you couldn't tell the difference in how things ran. It may have helped to slow a rear main seal leak that I had, but I never did any scientific test to prove it.

Running 5w30 in the F150 in sig, haven't noticed any changes. May even try 0w40 next OC.

It's interesting how guys will build up the courage to go from 5W-20 to 5W-30, but can't make that giant leap to 10W-30.

How cold does it get in the north east where you live, some parts are a little too cold to run 10w30 year round

Motorcraft 10W-30 would be good that way if there's any changes in the way the engine runs or sounds, it'll be directly related to the viscosity change. My prediction is the engine will get smoother and quieter.

I just turned over 100,000 miles on an F150 running Kendall semi-synthetic 5W-20. 10,000 mile drain interval, oil analysis every time. I see NO reason to not follow Ford's recommendation. They designed and tested it.

OTOH, there is no shortage of internet advice available recommending everything form Euro diesel oils to extra virgin olive oil (available in straight weight only). Bottom line: your engine, you get to pick. I picked "follow directions". Works for me.

I'd stay put with what I had. Is the price difference that great?
I run Mobil1 5w-20 in my 2012 5.0 and use 10,000 miles as my drain cycle. At 80,000 miles it's still running.

100K isn't a lot of miles these days. That's just getting broke in nicely. Report back at 300K. I also wasn't aware UOA indicated anything about general engine wear. Then may show if the engine is about to grenade or has a coolant leak, intake leak, etc. Certainly not slightly different levels of of wear, if any existed.

Really appreciate all the responses guys..i really do..thank you! Nice to get opinions / options..my wife is upset im on my third truck in three yrs so i kinda have to keep this one..lol just looking for the best options for the long haul...

SBF 5.0 with 212,000 and counting. After 150, it went to HDEO. Been there ever since. Hoping for 300K

But, I don't live where we get below 27*F more than 3 days a year. So no big deal on cold starts. If I lived colder, I'd be doing different. It's summer heat I have to worry about climbing hills and pulling trailers ...
