Valvoline High Mileage Synthetic vs Castrol Edge High Mileage 5w30

Been visiting/lurking for some time and finally decided to join and get some input.

I have a 2018 f150 with a 5.0. Truck has been flawless since I bought it but it does burn a little oil which is a common problem with my mode year and the 5.0 so it is what it is. I had the dealership do the oil changes when I first got it since living in an apartment, I didn't have anywhere great to change it myself. Truck is pushing 110,000 and I have the space to do my own oil changes. The truck calls for 5w20 but I have recently made the switch to 5w30 and the truck has PUP in it now but its too hard to find locally.

Looking to make a switch to a High Mileage oil to see if that helps any with burning oil. Locally Valvoline HM Synthetic and Castrol Edge HM (black jug) are the easiest to find locally. I would like to stick to these 2 in case I have to buy oil locally, I can buy the same kind and not have to worry about it should the oil consumption not improve.

So, which is the better oil?

I wouldn't hesitate to use either...I'm sure they're both good. I would use whichever is most readily available in your area.

Does it matter much that the Castrol HM is a little thinner viscosity than the Valvoline?

No, because they're both a 5W30 grade of oil. The fact that one oil has a slightly lower cSt(as you mention, thinner viscosity) means little. However, I guess if you wanted to compare the FORD 5.0L calls for 5W20, and you want to stay closer to this grade of oil, then you might want to use the Castrol HM 5W30. But the Castrol may just start at a lower cSt and possibly stay in grade better than the Valvoline...IDK!

On the other hand, have you considered trying the new Valvoline Restore & Protect? Lots of discussions on this site about its benefits of cleaning over about 4 oil changes and beyond.

Changing the oil at the right time will make the biggest impact on engine life over the brand used. I never heard of someone's engine failing because they used a particular brand of oil.

Maybe not causing it to fail but certainly some oils might not keep an engine as clean as others, causing them to burn more oil and also be down on power and MPG. Which is why we are seeing people using VRP have less oil consumption.

Changing oil early won’t solve the issue if you are using an oil that doesn’t keep the engine as clean as another oil would. So you are still better off using a higher quality oil at longer intervals than you are using a lower quality oil at shorter intervals.

As KC said I think restore and protect would be a better choice to try to lower oil consumption. 110k is about there for minor ring deposits to start to have effect. But you can't go wrong using any 5w-30 if changed frequently either.

If you're burning a little bit of oil, start with Valvoline R&P for the next 4 oil changes. Then, use whatever HM oil you can get locally.

What OCI are you using?? Either of the oils you mentioned in your post would be fine for up to 10K in that engine. I personally wouldn't do more than 5-6K.

OCI is 5k. Thought I had that in the first time. I will look into Valvoline R&P. Since the truck isn't burning a ton of oil will likely go with one of the 2 I asked about this time and if things don't improve I will make a switch to the R&P.

I have seen the oil analysis of the Valvoline HM and know its got a boat load of moly. Has anybody seen an oil analysis of the Castrol Edge HM? How does the ad pack stack up?

VRP or V EP HM

I run 5qts ep/hm and 2 qts restore and protect in my ram ........ loves it and YES I MIX OIL ..... OMFG !!!!!! right

Either oil is fine, but in your situation, I would ask your current OCI and your 0lans for the future. I would also ask for a more specific measurement on how much oil the car is consuming. You would be fine with VRP, but would point out that if you are not chasing dirt, piston ring deposits, it’s only a middling oil.

I'm like most, either will work.
I have used both, I'm using quakerstate HM now
