Hello all, my dad owns a 2013 Silverado 5.3 lc9 with AFM DOD, it has 165k miles and running strong. This truck is a mostly highway truck with some city miles and lives in Illinois 8 months out of the year and north Texas area the rest of the year. It has had a steady diet of 5w30 Quaker state with ac delco oil filters. I’m wanting to switch the truck to a European oil of some sort, I’m thinking a 5w or 0w40 a3/b4, or castrol 5w30 a3/b4 euro. Two questions, is it okay to run a 5w40 euro oil in this truck? It has high miles and has some slight knocking on the bottom end not a huge deal, not looking to “cover it up” but it’s a worn in engine. The next question is if 40wt is okay in this AFM engine, is a non dexos rated euro oil okay? I’m under the impression that a euro oil a3/b4 mb229.5 rated oil is most likely higher “quality” than an oil that just meets the dexos rating. But I just want to make sure it’s not a huge deal. Thanks

I'd run a 3.5+ hths oil without hessitation. I'm using 5w-40 in my 2021's 6.2 and I'm still under warranty, I have no fears. If you ever do get a lifter tick immediately stop driving it. If you do you can save the cam and prevent the ground up metal from ruining all the bearings especially the cam bearings. If you try to run it with a bad lifter you'll ruin a salvageable motor that only needs new lifters.

I think a 5w40 would be ideal for the OP. A Euro oil would be good, but expensive and not widely available in USA.

I think the ideal oil would be Shell Rotella 5w40. Also, Rotella is a lower price and widely available. I suggest Shell Rotella 5w40.

Other excellent choices would be (in no particular order) Chevron Delo 5w40, Penzoil 5w40, Mobil One 5w40, or any other brand of 5w40 would be good, IMO.

Availablity and price in the OP's local area should decide which 5w40 to use.

I don't think 0w40 is a good choice because it's more prone to viscosity breakdown than 5w30 or 5w40.

I've tried (in several 4L Jeeps) all the oils I mentioned in this post, including Mobil 0w40. I got best results from 5w40 all brands.

My son’s 2013 SLT 5.3L bought new in August 2013 is pushing 400,000 kms (240k miles) much of it towing and off road on a diet of 15w40 in the summer and 5w40 in the winter.
80W140 in the diffs.

The 5.3 in general are very robust and will run on just about anything. I currently have a jug of RGT 5w20 topped off with 5w30 in my LM7.

Don’t get me wrong obviously mobile 0w40 is a great oil, but quite a bit more expensive than Quaker states 5w40, and I prefer a 5w over a 0w just a tad bit more robyst
$5 different in the two. the 0w vs 5w being more robust isn’t always the case. also, M1 is A40 approved whilst QS is “meets or exceeds”. just my 0.02

Have been running M1 0W-40 FS Euro for couple years now on an L59 (flex LM7) Suburban. At 245k it’s very happy. A40 spec is a good one to look for.
