Obesity

Eat less, eat better and move around more. Tried and true. Doesn't work for everyone as there are other components to weight gain/loss but reducing caloric intake and using more energy is a proven method lol.

@alarmguy good point, it's a very big health issue that has compounding impacts on overall health.
Yes, I mean, it's just fact. Ask any doctor. Gosh, before we moved I had a really good relationship with my cardiologist. He was working on me regarding a heart timing issue. It was corrected with an ablation and my heart working at full capacity with en EF score via echogram of 60 and a angiogram EF score (if I remember correctly) of 55. Which is textbook perfect. I do have some plaque in my heart veins placed at 20% which is the lowest the scale can go. A stress test will only reveal blockages above 65 - 70%

Anyway, I was feeling guilty being a bit overweight. After all I have my struggles at times too. Though on the scale overweight, I am thinner then most even when I gain some pounds which I am careful about and then take action to lose them. I only eat healthy foods, just sometimes to much of it. Like to much fruit etc. Anyway, I mention to my cardio dr I was embarrassed that I gained a little weight. He surprised me by his response that I will never forget.
"oh my god, if you saw the condition of some of my patients" and "the way we eat in this country is insane"

@buster I am passionate on the subject as I try to beat the horrible family genes on the male side of my family.
At my age I am the only one who has not needed heart bypass surgery and does not have diabetes. and by the time I age one more year, my dad died in the driveway of our home many decades ago at the age of 69, cold winter day, collapsed in the driveway and it was over.
(now if I wasnt diagnosed with prostrate cancer 6 weeks ago I would be thrilled but that is another thread, so far so good, still fresh and not up to the treatment stage yet) *LOL*

Do you know specifically how much in calories you are eating with the crackers I bet more than you think. If I was in a cut no way I’d be sitting around eating cheese and crackers that’s a recipe for failure for sure.
Haven’t bothered. Its like an ounce of cheese, bit of pepperoni and some multi grain crackers—fits into a cereal bowl with space to spare.

It’s the red wine that does me in. Left to my own devices I’d have a bottle every night.

Alcohol is a 3X killer in the diet department

1) Hard on the most vital organ: Your liver
2) It lowers inhibitions so you eat even more
3) The calories are neither fish nor foul, ie not as carbs, not as fat.

Indeed. At some point I'll figure out how to nix it, but for now, it's my go-to for coping--the rest of life I can't change, but I sure can escape for an hour or two. First world problems and all that.

I guess I'll "weigh in" with another unscientific opinion here. I have struggled to lose weight most of my life and was overweight from about 13-38 despite any changes to my diet or any amount of exercise. There were a couple brief periods where I did lose weight but only because I was burning so many calories in relation to overall intake. For instance I lost a lot of weight in my mid to late 20s because I didn't have a car and rode my bike 1-3hrs 7 days a week. Finally though, in my late 30s and into my 40s I decided that I had to figure out a way to weigh less without relying on an unsustainable level of physical activity. At least for me, it is the carbs plain and simple, and making an effort to eat earlier in relation to when I go to sleep. Within a few weeks of nearly eliminating 100% of carbs in my diet the weight just disappeared. I still eat fruit and can enjoy an occasional sandwich or taqueria trip but carbs have to be minimized in my diet. Personally I find Mexican food tasty but it seems to equal nearly instant and massive weight gain as so many dishes are a huge load of carbs and fat. Cutting out the taqueria food really helped in my weight loss goal. Our bodies naturally burn the sugars first and then all that fat gets stored for later, but we keep eating so it just ends up hanging around far too long. I've played around with adding back different amounts and types of carbs but it always seems that less is better. Admittedly I plan on going completely off the rails at Thanksgiving since mashed potatoes and stuffing are the only dishes I care about, but it's a once a year meal and we only live once. For some interesting reading on nutrition and some good basic recipes I highly recommend the book "Nourishing Traditions" because it's very old-school in its approach.

Thank God I don't drink, or I'd really be in trouble; I don't see the attraction. The same goes with chocolate, no thanks, now pass me another slice of 'za.

Life expectancy US: 77.5yrs

Life expectancy in some EU countries where drinking is a national sport:

Finland: 81.7yrs
Estonia: 78.8yrs
Poland: 78.6yrs

When I go to Europe, which is very often, especially when I go to home country, I am pretty much living in bars; see this friend, that friend. Bunch of alcohol, "meza" (cut smoked beef, prosciutto , cheeses etc). Somehow, I lose in a week 10lbs. Why?
1. Food is generally much better (less additives, sugars etc).
2. It is more urban. You don't need a car everywhere. What people here consider exercise (walking), there is a normal human activity.
3. Generally less stressful lifestyle (that does not apply to me here, but just making general observation).

I think calling it a joke is sidestepping the issue. You're bringing up a small portion of the population to explain the MASSIVE rise of overweight people in the USA. Not only that but BMI was the same measurement back then too and you can bet Americans muscle mass has declined in our modern world.
Let's not forget about the garbage ultra processed food we now consume vs wholesome unprocessed products of the 50s, 60s and into the 70s.

So let's go by pounds. Keep in mind it has become worse even since 2002 when this was done.

Here is a CDC statement, problem it is older done in 2002 and things have got worse since.

I mean, it's all here, to deny it is fruitless. It is a pubic health crisis in the USA. Most likely way worse than drug addition or any other human condition is my feeling. Never mind the crazy increase in the cost of treating everyone. Yet we complain about the cost of health care. Go figure. Another example is my feeling of "its not my fault"

I gladly call it a joke as some things are assumed based on numbers and not taken more seriously. For example, a handful of years ago at a height of 5'7" and bodyweight around 226 lbs. I was less than 15% bodyfat and had what I considered insane natural strength/mass in the gym. BMI would register just over 35%. According to idiotic healthcare my 'ideal' bodyweight was 140 lbs at most to have 'proper' BMI. Run those numbers and you'd think approaching morbidly obese, but looking at a 35" waist, tissue thin skin, deadlifting 745 lbs drug free among other feats of size/strength says a bit different. Clearly America has gotten pathetically sloppy/lazy overall, but there are plenty of exceptions to lame healthcare guidelines.

Obviously we cant have a discussion if you are going to bring up your situation and apply it to 350 million Americans.
Im not sure how you are missing this fact. My god, just go to you your local shopping places and look around. Then pull up a 1960s film but forget all that, here are the facts as of 2002, now add a few more pounds to that in order to bring it up to 2024 and PLEASE do not tell me it is because people have larger bones and muscles in 2024!!!!!;)

Got up around 8am (on vacation this week.) Fasted until 10:30am (only water and black coffee) then ate three over easy eggs with salt, pepper and butter and bakery fresh sourdough with butter. Went for a 5 mile run at the park with my younger daughters who road their bikes along with me. Finished off with some bodyweight exercises while they road some more. Fit people are harder to kill. 👊

I drink a ton of sparkling water and only recently switched from buying it in plastic bottles to glass; it's getting harder to find and it really drives up the price. They also say to avoid drinking from aluminum cans 🤷‍♂️
I did a quicky search online and couldn't find anything concrete to suggest that drinking from aluminum cans was harmful. Perhaps you are aware of other sources for this information.

Wife sent me to grocery store earlier for some supplies for all the things she is cooking. Some how, some way , a large container of Blue Bell (at least no sugar added) Ice Cream made it into my bags! :devilish: When she saw that I had to pledge not to touch it until tomorrow after everyone eats lunch! :)

Soda cans are lined with epoxy plastic to prevent corrosion
You’re not drinking a beverage from aluminum. Your are drinking a beverage from plastic, besides micro plastics inside all our bodies these products affect hormone levels as well

“Starting in the late 1990s, scientists had sounded the alarm about BPA, particularly its ability to mimic the hormone estrogen. In animal and epidemiological studies, university researchers linked BPA to breastand prostate cancer, reduced fertility, diabetes, genital defects, and altered behavior. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found the chemical in the urine of 93% of U.S. adults.”
