Oils with alkylated naphthalene result in cleaner engine and less wear than oils with ester. To me this is a win - win.

"... oils formulated with Synesstic™ 5 AN, instead of ester, showed improved oxidative stability ... and significantly reduced cam wear in engine tests."

Ahh, advertising blurb too...

The mechanism is explained in my old thread....
here

although it's PP preso.

AN doesn't fight the additives for surface space...additives still do the AW...

I've just found this thread after SR5 mentioned the new Nulon range in a another thread!

Very cool of them to compete with Penrite on the racing oils and when did their Euro 5W30 and High Performance 0W40 become PAO based? I just noticed this too after SR5 pointed it out. Were they always PAO + Ester based before but never advertised it? I wonder if the new bottles state this on the back somewhere or would you just need to guess based on manufacture date?

Hey KL31,

I downloaded the Nulon product data sheets for both Nulon 5W-30 European Full Synthetic and Nulon 0W-40 High Performance Full Synthetic back in 2013 and checked them again today (2017). Yes they have both changed, and for the better.

OLD: 5W-30 Euro
Base stock of PAO, uses Molybdenum Dithiocarbamate (Moly-DTc),
"Recommended for" VW504.00 / 507.00, plus BMW LL-04 & MB 229.51 (therefore low SAPS claims)
Yet it's ACEA A3/B4 with a TBN of 10.8 and a Sulphated Ash of 0.618 % (To me A3/B4 is a high SAPS oil, something not quite right here)

NEW: 5W-30 European (title change)
Base stock of PAO, NO Moly-DTc
"Approved under" VW 504.00 / 507.00, plus BMW LL-04 & MB 229.51 (not sure if approved or meets & exceeds for the last two)
Now it's ACEA C3 with a TBN of 5.4 and a SA of 0.5 % (This makes more sense to me).

Anyway the new European 5W-30 is PAO based and carries proper VW 504/507 Approval, plus it all adds up and makes sense now. I would happily use it.

OLD: 0W-40 High Performance
Base stock of PAO and Ester, yes with Moly-DTc
"Meets or Exceeds" BMW LL-98, MB 229.3, VW 502 / 502.01 / 505, A3/B4-98, API SM
TBN = 8.3, SA = 0.898

NEW: 0W-40 High Performance
Base stock of PAO and Ester, yes with Moly-DTc
"Meets or Exceeds" BMW LL-01, MB 229.5, Porsche A40, Renault RN0700 / RN0710, VW 502 / 502.01 / 505, A3/B4-12, API SN
TBN = 10.2, SA = 1.1%

So this is a lot better too, not perfect, but much better. I would trust it now days, but not a few years ago.

I can't speak for what was on the label a few years ago, but I had a bottle of Nulon 5W-30 European in my hand a few days ago, and it clearly stated "Approved under VW Standard 504.00 and VW Standard 507.00" on the front. On the back it clearly stated it used PAO base stocks.

Oh, and just so people know it's not all about thick oils in Australia.

Nulon also make a 0W-16 (API SN), 0W-20 (SN and ILSAC GF-5) and 5W-20 (SN, GF-5, Ford WSS M2C 945A) all are Full Synthetics.

They all claim Moly-DTc as that's Nulon's thing. But none claim PAO or Ester, so I assume they are all Group III synthetics, as Nulon tends to let you know when they are using something special.

I'll juts add, that I had to help a friend with a modern VW TDI, and I picked a 1L bottle of full synthetic Nulon 5W30 European at a very good price. It's probably the least expensive yet approved VW 504/507 oil in Australia right now.

I had the 5W20 in my lawnmower IIRC back in '14, as the grass was still growing in a mild winter...hated the load couple of lnocks it gave just as it fired...think I've still got the bottle on the garage floor somewhere.

You used 5W20 in a lawnmower ??
I used GTX 20W50 in my old 4-stroke mower.

You could mix the Nulon 5W-20 with that Castrol Edge 25W-50 you have knocking about to make a Shannow 15W-35 semi-synthetic. Good enough for the mower.

Oh, I did better than that....

Was interesting doing back to back thermocouple down the dipstick hole tests on the 5W20 on the governor versus 20W60 on the governor...IIRC, about 10-15C difference.

Have a look at the VW 504/507 standard in the Lubrizol comparison tool. It's very impressive and same as the Porsche C30. It's better than both BMW LL-01 and MB 229.51 by the comparison tool.

https://online.lubrizol.com/relperftool/pc.html

It's a low SAPS and low TBN oil, but for 10,000km (6,000 miles) it should look after you well.

Thanks for the info SR5. Seems like Nulon are chasing Penrite but I'm impressed with their PAO based Euro and HP oils. Too bad the price seems to still be quite high.

Funny thing about the Lubrizol site and it's tool, it works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. Tried chrome and firefox with no luck. I have seen the 504/507 pie chart though and it looks like it's unbeatable. I wonder if it's because of the low saps not needing to be tested as long as it can't do as many kms/miles with low TBN or is it just simply better? I have no idea regarding that stuff.

I always have to hit the reload button, it never works for me on the first go.
