Not sure about M1 0w-20

Changed over from one run of Castrol 5w-20 in my Element to Mobil 1 0w-20. Well, now there is a ticking sound and I swear it seems a little louder. Castrol came out looking like new with 4K miles on it. I may just switch back. Not too happy with this....

When I used Mobil 1 0w20 in the 2.4, I thought it may have been a tad louder on cold starts. Generally with this engine I have not noticed a difference in engine noise with different oils.

I am currently running M1 0W20 in my daughters Toyota Yaris. For the past three fills it has been on this oil and we are really pleased with it.

I have ordered a kit from Blackstone and will be doing the test for the 25-30k interval. Will be interested in what it shows.

Car is speced for 5w-20 and I was planning on running for 7-10k miles. I will see what happens over the next month, but if Castrol dino keeps it quieter and its cheaper, well that may just be my answer. I can't believe it came out so clean looking. That really surprised me.

I could see running OW-20 if you lived in a colder climate like North Dakota, but in Texas maybe it would be better to stick with the 5W-20, just a thought.

There's a thought, where the 0w20 oil would really shine is in extreme cold, even though it says can be used in place of 5W20. You might consider using 5W20 during summer months, and changing to 0W20 during the winter time, altough in TX it really doesn't matter.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't you want the oil to look somewhat dirty. That way you know the additives are capturing that stuff that isn't being filtered?

I agree that the 0w-20 may not be the best. I was thinking fuel efficiency, like it says, that may have been dumb on my part.

CTC, the oil was a little dirty, but the engine only has 50k miles and the oil was amber, but very clear and pure looking. The one run of Pennsh** I did before the Castrol came out sludgy and black after 3500 miles of use.....worse than the oil that comes out of my diesel after 20k miles of use. Other than those two dino runs, the engine has always had Mobil 1 5w-20.

Maybe the oil's so clean because it's doing a lousy job of suspending contaminates and leaving them in the engine.

Why would there be any hot climate difference between 0w20 and 5w20? The 0w should potentially pump easier on a cold start and both should be the 'same oil' once up to temp. Aside from 0w20 being full synthetic and more expensive, it fits a better range of operating temps than 5w20 making it a more ideal engine oil.

Not with todays oils.

My thoughts too. A 0W oil at any ambient temp is still going to be more viscous than a 30wt at operating temp.

AMSOIL 0W-20 and probably Mobil 1 naturally fall into the 0W category due to its synthetic base oils.
