Switched to Amsoil 10-40 motorcycle oil in my TTR250. Shifting became notchy, sometimes difficult with it. Ran it a second oil change, and it seemed to get worse. Switched to Rotella T synthetic 5-40 and instantly the shifting was smooth and easy. No exactly knocking the oil, just saying my bike doesn't like it!

Iv'e had similar issues with M1 and amsoil in my WR250. Seemed to be due to clutch drag. It seems to like Honda syn blend and Rotella 15-40 dino. I change frequently so I'm sticking with the Rotella
My FZ1 however likes amsoil and M1

The bikes are used for trail riding in the desert, nothing stressful. My son has the identical bike (two years older) and he indicates his shifts fine with the Amsoil. He may not know the difference, or it may be fine, I haven't ridden it, so I am not sure. Anyhow I will continue to use my Amoil stock in certain bikes till I run out, then it is Rotell T syn for all of them. Who knows, some of the bikes may not like Rotella and I will have to look for something else.

that is true. You can have two identical bikes and 1 will like the oil, the other may not. Just depends.

One oil will not work for every different application. Sometimes, but not always

There are probably more variables than we can count that go into the "shift feel" of a bike. I've had days where my Wing shifts like butter and another where it clunks and notches like crazy -- and the same oil was there both times, separated by a day or two and a few hundred miles.

So, as 02zx9r wrote, "Just depends."

Well, unless you're running Rotella dino ... that stuff is magic mojo juice. Everyone knows that.

Side story ... normally I ride with silicone ear plugs and a helmet, and I've become accustomed to the sound of my Wing based on that. But the other day I'd washed the bike and took it for a spin around the neighborhood to dry it a bit, with no helmet and no ear plugs. Oh my ... the horrid sounds that bike made! Of course, it always makes those sounds, but I normally don't hear it because I've wearing ear protection.

I know exactly what you mean. I ALWAYS wear my helmet, and wear earplugs when I am on the highway. Once i rode it around the block and I know what you mean, the sounds were unreal. And it was actually scary for me, I never ride without my helmet, and did not like it at all. I like having the protection. Know some guys who dont wear a helmet around town but on the highway. Tell them even at 30mph, cracking your head on the pvement is gonna hurt. But to each their own!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

In my 35 years of riding I put a helmet to the test twice, wore a hole through one and cracked another. I agree that same oil can act differently in different bikes. In my Concours M1 15-50 works great and will run that in the wing this spring. Amsoil is not worth the money!
