No love for Pennzoil....

"Is there any reason to think PZ and QS don't come out of the same spiggot?"

Yes, I worked for SOPUS recently and can assure you they are different chemistries. Lots of competition within the company between brands.

Truer words were never spoken. When Pennzoil first bought Quaker State you would have thought we were bitter enamies the way the brands fought each other.

As for as Pennzoil filters being FRAM, no big deal, they work just fine. Some of them are even Purolators. A bit of filter history for those who care; In the 80's the Pennzoil Company owned Purolator. Still can't believe they sold them.

Why does pennzoil not get much love in this forum? When someone ask for a dino oil recommendation, most people will say Havoline, Castrol, Valvoline etc...but seldom do i hear Pennzoil.

I read this forum everyday. The one that gets very little mention is the Valvoline.

I bring up Pennzoil all the time - in the same breath with Havoline, Castrol and Motorcraft.

Valvo who?

In general Valvoline shows incredibly good oil analysis reports overall. I still LOVE the ASHLAND/VALVOLINE engine test labs and personnel who tech them. To bad a few years ago I #@$%! them off with some of my public comments here. Haven't spoken to me since. Guys there is a cost associated with "sharing" here.

So, Penzoil, Shell and QState are all up to the quality standards of Slick-50? That's good to know. Slick-50 is admired by all those in the know and any company that would market it must sell oils of the same high quality. What a great recommendation. You can say my Penzoil is every bit as good a Slick-50.

The lady that's head of their technical department is one of the sharpest cookies around. She use to work for Pennzoil. Come to think of it, she might be their head chemist. They also have a few good tech reps that use to work for Pennzoil. I do think they make a good product, but I also think they have the uglyist bottles there is. Just my opinion.

Lonnie, Don't know if you are addressing me but in this case I don't recommend using Slick-50 until they allow me to reformulate it. I NEVER recommend its use for our customers.

Lonnie, let me give you a little history. First off, Pennzoil never had anything to do with Slick 50, we sold against it for years. Quaker State bought the Slick 50 company years ago. When Pennzoil bought Quaker State, Slick 50 came with it. We tried to sell Slick 50, no buyers. Shell bought the Pennzoil/Quaker State Company, guess what, Slick 50 came with it. Shell has tried to sell the Slick 50 portion, no buyers. Now, they have a lot of money tied up in the product so they are going to sell it. It is not the same product is was years ago when you had to shake the bottle to mix it up. So if the only reason you can figure to bad mouth a companies products is because they market Slick 50, so be it. Someday you will no better.

Sorry, rant over.

Good to know!

I'm not a chemist so how can I explain this. Let's see. Remember years ago when they would sell you a powered form of moly or powered moly mixed with somekind of liquid, had to shake it up, then it plugged up everything. Now they have soluable moly mixed with the oil and it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Well sort of the same process. The chemicals in Slick 50 are soluable. Plus, there is about 1/4 of the stuff in there.

I always sold against the product, I never sold the product after we purchased Quaker State. I do not believe in it and never will.

I know I will get dumped on for this, but I don't really care, I'm retired. I think Valvoline is a very good product, but I would never pour their extra additive, VSOT or whatever it is in to my already formulated oil. No need for it but a good way to make extra money.

In my conversation with Shell tech, I was told the same thing in that both QS teams and PZ teams compete internally. It's good to know that PP is a great oil for the money. The QS Torque power is interesting also.

1st post. Johnny, approx. 1 year after we opened 3rd M-Benz point in Houston in 1976, the guys who invented S-50 came to me proposing we use it in customer's cars! Factory reply was a resounding "Nein!" Cited reason? Only oils they had tested were allowed. We were pumping good old "Z7" PZ at the time with good results.

I remember back around 1987 when I bought a can of Slick 50, and yes, it came in a metal can! I remember having to shake the heck out of it and then they said you had to pour it into a running engine and then drive it and make sure not to shut the engine off for a half hour. I remember paying $50 for it back then! I was young and foolish! A few years later, I was still foolish, I bought a bottle of Duralube. I actually believed those products coated the engine with a protective layer that would all but eliminate engine wear completely.

Don't kick yourself too hard Patman when it comes to
additives. I also fell victim to Duralube, as late
as 96.

They say that misery loves company, so your not alone.

Well, I did the DuraLube thing every 30K on my old Hyundai with M1 on a 3 or 4K OCI from the time I got it @90K, until I ran into you guys mid 2005. I quit using it when I found BITOG. When I traded it Feb of this year, it had 288K, had just passed emissions, and burned not a drop of oil over a 3K OCI. After I ran into you guys, I took the OCI out to 6-ish, and then had to add a half quart or so of make-up oil to keep it to full. The DuraLube may not have helped, but it apparently didn't kill it. Me thinks the maintenance and the fact the old Mitsu 1.6 4 bangers were bulletproof were responsible.

May I have the same luck with this one (WITHOUT the DuraLube)..
