Ah, and I have much love for your little groundhog.

Yes, less than two month to go and town will be full of out of staters again. Should be wild, I think it may be on a weekend next year. There will probably be 35-40,000 people up on the ole hill.

Terry, nothing was directed at you. I understand what Johnny is saying. My comment is that Slick-50 comes shrink wrapped with Penzoil. As an outsider to Penzoil, it looks like Penzoil is endorsing Slick-50. Maybe endorsing is not strong enough. It looks like Penzoil is saying we really believe in good lubrication and this is what you should use and we are serious enough to put them together in one package so you can see exactly what you are getting. The reason I even brought this up is that we saw a guy at the counter of a parts store with some bottles of Penzoil, see the display, as pointed out by the cashier, take his Penzoil back and exhchage if for Castrol GTX. He said nothing but the message is clear.

I think there is some irony in Shell buying Pennzoil. When attending dealer training school for Shell great effort was made to convince us that Pennzoil was junk and that we should not allow it in our service station. Perhaps because Shell didn't enjoy providing an outlet for a competitor. It is truly an about face for Shell to now promote Pennzoil as their flagship brand.

You hit the nail on the head. Besides it was my experience with Shell that the gasoline marketing guy/and gals had no clue what the lubricants side was doing, and the same could be said about the lubricants side not knowing what the fuels side is doing.

I had the fortune back in the 90's to attend two tech classes at Shell's Westhollow facility. Anytime someone asked about Pennzoil they would just say it's a good product and move on. But if you asked them about Mobil they would go nuts. No love lost between Shell and Mobil.

Pennzoil was a very good customer of Shell Chemical for over 30 years. All of Pennzoil's VI improvers were purchased from Shell Chemical, plus some additives.

I don't agree that there is no love for Pennzoil motor oil at this web site. Actually it is one of the oils that many guys here recommend and Pennzoil seems to usually display good UOAs. But often Chevron and Halvoline are available for lower prices and also show good UOAs. Valvoline seems to receive less love here but in UOAs Valvoline oils seem to do well also.

As far as I know Pennzoil is still the best selling motor oil in the USA. There used to be a myth that Pennzoil caused sludge but I think that myth has been well put to rest.

Probably any good quality SM-rated motor oil will get the job done in 3 month-3000/5000 mile service intervals.

I am glad that I never wasted money on Slick 50. But I did buy another PTFE oil supplement. And I used it for quite a while. I will stick to Auto-RX.

Yeah, but can someone explain why SOPUS loads Pennzoil up with paraffin wax?

I hope you are not serious.

(sometimes sarcasm travels at 50,000 feet I guess)

I have used Pennzoil for so many years I can't remember when I started using it. I was very happy to see PP show up on the market because now I can have 1 oil that works in all my vehicles and get rid of all the clutter on my garage oil shelf. Now if some company would make a universal synthetic trans fluid I could get rid of the DexronVI, Honda Z-1, and Toyota T-IV half full bottles.

Sopus/Pennzoil/Quaker State are my last choice oils simply because of their marketing of the Slick-50 products. Snake oils like Slick-50 are designed to extract money from the pockets of ill-informed customers, and any company which deals in them is worthy of derision in my book. I am surprised how many people hold a grudge against Castrol for it's roll in getting group III oils legally defined as synthetics while at the same time giving Pennzoil/Sopus a free ride on the much worse Slick-50 scam.

All a matter of personal opinion of course, but you asked why so little "Love" for Pennzoil. Sopus is also big time into dubious claims for all kinds of "special" oils. "Torque Power", "4x4 Oil", & "Advanced Engine" all come to mind. The modern history of the Quaker State product line is all about silly names and nonsense marketing. No surprise that Quaker State bought Slick-50 before Sopus bought Quaker State.

By contrast, Chevron-Texaco gets my admiration for making first rate products, spending very little on dubious promotions and selling the product at a good price. The product line is straightforward and the few special purpose variations (i.e. high mileage) have some decent science behind them. At $.59/quart from Kragen sales, Chevron Supreme is the bargain oil of modern times. You can pay almost $3/quart for Pennzoil at an auto parts store and have nothing extra for your money than a lot of advertising.

Thats been my argument for awhile now. Lately some have been ripping Mobil 1, rightfully so to some extent, but ignoring the reality of the situation overall.

Pennzoil and Valvoline have both been among the most pathetic marketers of oil out there taking advantage of people that know very little if anything about oil. SUV oil? Torque power? Space age molecules that adapt? Give me a break.

Remember, these are the people that started this garbage. I believe Valvoline started a lot of it. Companies like Redline, Mobil and even Amsoil have done a much better job historically at marketing their products to auto enthusiasts that want a high quality, no nonsense products. No gimmicks, just specs. and facts. No sugar coating with lame labels like "Sludge Protection" and "NASA space age Molecules".
