I plan to purchase this Jeep on Sunday. 21 years old with 24,386 miles. Has no leaks at all presently. 4.0 litre straight six, OEM recommendation is 10W-30 in summer and 5W-30 in winter. Original owner was a UPS pilot that parked it at the airport and flew packages around the world. I've always used Mobil 1 in all of my vehicles with 6 month oil change intervals. Never had any problems. Since we're now a bit older and retired, our milege is usually less than 4,000 miles in 6 months. This will probably be driven no more than 2,000 miles/6 months. Presently use Mobil 1 5W-30 ESP in my 2022 Mazda CX-30 with direct injection 2.5 litre turbo four. What should I use in this?

Private sale?
That Jeep looks good to start with....imagine a competent detailing job!

Automatic, yes? Is it SelecTrac or CommandTrac?

Maintenance tip if an automatic:
There's a drain plug in the trannie pan. Remove it and one gallon of ATF drains.
ATF comes in gallons.......
You get the idea.

And remember, don't tip your Jeep over-they're top heavy!

Anything plastic/rubber is probably compromised, or a few good jaunts will cause the same to be compromised. Plan accordingly. Oil is the least of your worries. Good find.

Thanks for the oil recommendation. That will make it easy.

Yeah, this one is an automatic (my arthritis precludes a 5 speed in a Wrangler TJ) and very surprisingly has no rust. I've owned a 1999 and 2002 previously and well know the rust issues. I'm not an off roader (74 years old) and have always had small cars as our second vehicle (Mazda Miata, Toyota MR-2, MGB) but they're getting a bit too hard to get into and out of. We live in a patio home complex and have that ridiculously small 2 car garage and I wanted to actually be able to fit 2 cars in the garage. This will fit fine. And they really are fun to drive.

Any euro 30/40 will be great so use that esp on hand. Nice clean jeep. Only 5 posts since 06? You only come around in a blue moon 😁
I use Mobil 1. I have no oil questions or issues. :)
Way back in a previous lifetime (think 1970s) I worked for Mobil oil in a labratory setting and saw how good that oil was.

I also would use the same oil you are using in your Mazda. I've always had good luck with M1 oils, and ESP 5W-30 is a good one.

Great find. That should be a good car for you, for many years. Considering how good of condition the paint is in, perhaps the original owner always parked it in the parking garage at the airport, rather than out in Economy.

I'm assuming you live somewhere in the Louisville area, since the original owner flew for UPS? I used to live in Madisonville. This time of year particularly, I miss Kentucky a lot.

Very nice find. I lucked onto this 05 Wrangler in February. 102K miles which I thought was pretty low considering, LOL.
I'm running Valvoline 10w-30 Synthetic HM in it right now. The engine seems to like it.

what made you move out of Kentucky to Utah?
The manufacturing plant, that I had moved to Kentucky to work at, moved all it's high volume production to a sister plant in Mexico. They moved all their service parts production to another sister plant in Utah.

My wife and I are from Utah. Both our mothers were getting on in years, so we took the opportunity to come home. We do love the West, but the Western Kentucky area holds a special place in our hearts. We have a son that still lives with his family in Kentucky.

I do not understand why people use ESP or Rotella in a gas engine. I know it is OK to use it, but those oils have more detergent to hold more diesel soot. Detergent is not oil so I would think it is basically diluting your oil with detergent that you don’t necessarily need. ESP also specifically states that it helps the Cat. That would believe me to think that it has less ZDDP because that is the known additive that attacks the catalytic converter. I would stick to the thiner recommended velocities and add a can of molly. Then because I’m assuming at 74 you are making a lot of short trips and the Molly because I bet your vehicle sits for days on end before it gets driven. Molly protects from those very very dry starts when the oil has a lot of time to run off of components. Anybody please feel free to correct me if I am off base.
