What is ExxonMobil doing to the Mobil 1 line?

Making a mess of it while trying to make more money from it. It started with M1 EP. It used to be that M1 was a PAO + V based oil, stated on Mobil's website. It was that simple. It was always field tested to 25,000 miles as well.

Then, they decided to create 2 Mobil 1's, Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance. Along with this, they brought out Mobil 5000 and 7500.

It becomes more confusing to the consumer which oils to use when you now have 3 varieties of Mobil 1. M1, M1 EP and M1 High Mileage. If you use a synthetic from the beginning, you shouldn't need a high mileage oil. At some point you'll want to jump to a higher viscosity oil when the engine becomes more worn. It's all about $$ to XOM.

It would have been nice to have seen Mobil make:

Mobil 1 (Regular) - Group III (lower cost)
Mobil 1 EP - PAO/V blend (25k miles)
Mobil Oil
Mobil High Mileage

If they were going to make a High Mileage oil, keeping it conventional would have been better IMHO. I'm an oil nut though and prefer to keep it simple. Hopefully Amsoil doesn't start this garbage.

Mobil needs three conventionals and two Mobil 1's in my opinion.

Mobil Bulk (Quicky Lube)
Mobil Clean (Same as current 7500)
Mobil Clean HM (Non-API + Max Viscosity + Extra Adds + 20% PAO)

Mobil 1 (Same as current EP)
Mobil 1 HP (Non-API Group IV/V)

The placing of mileage amounts on bottles can only lead to confusion with Mobil Clean (Bulk) going 10,000 mi in Hondas and superior products labled as 5000 and 7500. 20,000 mi OCI M1 (0W-40 Porsche) and 15,000 mile M1 EP is not going to help the confusion.

I wonder if they'll market a "High Mileage Extended Performance Mobil1" ??

Then after that they'll come out with a racing version of it and call it the High Mileage Extended Performance Mobil 1R!

LOL!

What about the truck racing circuit? I'm thinking they'll market a product called High Mileage Extended Performance Truck & SUV Mobil 1R.

I emailed mobil last week, about 7500, asking if it was discontineud, or going ot be
they answered, 'We have not discontinued or have plans in the future right now, of discontinuing".
Took them 3 or 4 days to answer my email.

The question remains. Should ExxonMobil should market their conventional oils as being sub-standard to regular SM/GF-4? If you are Honda owner with a 10,000 mi OCI and no clue about oil would you buy Mobil 5000 or 7500? How about Pennzoil that doesnt prominently display this same "limitation"?

Is it still the same quality oil or has the quality decreased?

Consensus is that at least the 5W-30/10W-30 regular and EP versions of the PCMO are now primarily Group III. The other grades of PCMO 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-40, 15W-50 supposedly contain varied amounts of GIII. I myself am somewhat scepticle that the 0W-40 contains GIII.

Does this mean reduced quality?
dunno.gif
But I do know GIII cost less than GIV PAO and to get the same performance you better be prepaired to beef up the additive package.

It seems in their own way...they are

"How to keep it. (Pennzoil warranty)
Just get a Pennzoil® oil change at a service center or change your oil with Pennzoil® every 4,000 miles or 4 months, whichever comes first. This may not be the same as some vehicle manufacturers recommend, but neither is the length of our limited warranty. The oil filter and air cleaner elements must be replaced and the emission control system must be maintained in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. You have to take very good care of your engine if you want it to last for ten years. Or 250,000 miles. Our limited warranty is transferable. The Pennzoil® limited warranty offers something that could prove valuable if you sell your vehicle before it's gone 250,000 miles. The limited warranty can be transferred to the next owner".

is Mobil 1's High Mileage PCMO made from recycled base stocks....

only their accounting dept will know for sure

so many choices, so few good PAO/ester oils to choose from

They have certainly succeeded in thoroughly confusing me...

My car has a supercharged 3.8L V6 (GM 3800 Series II with Eaton M90 blower, non-intercooled), now with 145,000 miles, and I run it fairly hard. I've used regular Mobil 1 (10W-30 per the owner's manual) ever since I've had it, but now I'm wondering if that's the best choice.

What I'm wondering is, what's the better oil? Mobil 1 regular, EP, or high mileage? I change my oil whenever the car's oil life calculator tells me to, so I'm more interested in better protection of a stressed, high-mileage engine than I am going longer between oil changes.

Are they now admitting that Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 EP do not adequately protect a motor from sludge and ring and valve wear, and do not adequatley protect seals? Very interesting!!!

The guys in the research lab must be very depressed that the sales and marketing guys have taken over the product.

Richard.

I have the same engine (almost same mileage) and have several UOA on the Mobil 1 product line. I have good UOA's from Mobil 1 (SL) then when my inventory ran out I bought the Mobil 1 SM, and tried the EP once to, and bearing wear increased by a decent amount.

My current fill has a quart of 15w50 mixed in but will be moving on to another oil since all the group III information has surfaced, which I suspected something changed over a year ago.

Yep, I'm afraid that is what happend. M1's quality has gone down over the years.

Let's keep buying Mobil products. I just bought some of their stock and I want it to go up so I can re-coup some of the money I've given them over the years !

Synthetic oil will make the ultimate high milege oil because widely cross graded viscosities can be used which will be better suited for worn out engines. For example in a worn engine a 0w40 synthetic oil can be used to replace a 5w20 motor oil and a 0w50 would be a good choice to lubricate a worn engine that calls for a 5w30 grade motor oil. Synthetic oils are also available in 5w60 and 10w60 viscosity grades. There is no need to follow the OEM specifications in an old engine that is out of warranty.

Wow, OK now, I'm totally confused. I've been using regular M1 5W-30 for years in my 88 Camaro 5.0L, now with about 160k on the clock. Last change I went with PP just to see how it works. The old gal doesn't leak, so I assume the seals are still OK, but she does burn a bit. Not enough to see visible smoke, but she goes through a quart about every 1000 miles. I suspect the burn is a combination of ring wear as well as valve stem seals.

So now exactly what is it that XOM is selling? Please un-confuse me!!!
Is regular M1 still PAO or is it now Grp 3?
Is M1 EP PAO?
What about this new M1 HM oil? Is it PAO or Grp 3?

As a side note, I've been using MaxLife in the Wife's 100k mile Taurus, and it works great, no leaks or burn at all between changes.
