New Guidelines for Cholesterol Readings

I’m 46 and very healthy. Never been on any meds in my life other than seasonal allergy OTC drugs. I’ve always been athletic. I exercise more than most people, and I do a lot of manual labor that has me sweating profusely most of the year. In addition, my buddies and I have been playing disc golf because it’s a good excuse to walk 2 to 4 miles in the woods and pass fun time. I had my annual physical last month. ALL of my blood work came back 100% perfect except my cholesterol which was around 185. Doc immediately mentioned meds.

I was telling some guys at work about it who are both older than me, one who is quite a bit older. Immediately both of them said “Don’t take statins. They’ll shave more years off your life than they’ve save.” And in fact, when my doctor sent me the follow up letter he did mention all the side effects people talk about.

I know that my cholesterol numbers are a result of genetics and poor diet and so I’ve just started to eat fruit and whole grains instead of donuts and Little Debbie snacks. I’m going to change my diet some and get tested again in a few months and see if those numbers look better… mostly out of curiosity because I am NOT wanting to take statins.
Cholesterol of 185 is nothing, your doc may be looking at other numbers because the number alone is a bit meaningless

But yeah lose the Little Debs

Yes, some. As in, I'm not going to starve myself to death in fear like some folks do. I will eat what I want, and simply shave some of the "bad" foods out. I was already getting vegetables, meats, and more natural drinks on a weekly basis as it was. I just changed my snacking from processed stuff to fruit.

If my numbers DON'T improve when I go back in a few months, I'm sure my doctor will be more insistent upon prescription meds at that point. But honestly I will likely still refuse because I feel good and I can work all day long outdoors and do whatever I want. I have no health limitations. And no family history of people dying at early age.

Yeah, triglycerides were 204 (high), VLDL 38 (normal), LDL 182 (high).

All of those are improved this year vs. 2024 when I did the same testing, except LDL which went up just slightly this year.

I'm with you and wish you luck.

In my case I cut out >95% of my carbs....and it was 'torture'....I go about life dreaming about carbs.
After missing an exit whilst dreaming of carbs, I realized that's distracted driving too.

Fortunately for me, veggies, yoghurt, fruits, lean meats have always been big.
And I'm still active and starving doesn't occur.

In a related vein: I just got an estimate for tinting my car's front 3 windows because of a tightness I feel on my left side.
No freak out here as a dermatologist examined me 4 days ago....but I want my exposure to radiation reduced.

I'm not adding more here. I've been scolded.

I don't trust the medical profession any more that I do, say used car dealers, lawyers, and politicians. This is not saying ALL docs are quacks, but following a protocol does not always lead to better health.
I'm with you on that. My Primary Care Dr pointed me in one direction and I went the opposite. Guess what. On my next visit my numbers were much better. She said keep doing what you are doing. I guess steak and eggs are good for me. My cholesterol and triglycerides went down. I do eat less carbs though. My Wife's Doctor tried to get her on statins and she doesn't even have high cholesterol. The system is broken.

If you search for something specific on the internet chances are you will find it.

Here's my advice. If there's one type of advice to never take from random people on the internet (youtubers, forums, etc), it's medical advice.

Talk to your doctor. Get a 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) opinion from other doctor(s).
Search peer published studies on cardiac deaths for patients on and without statins. There is no statistically significant improvement for patients on statins.

Might want t to do some research on fruits and grains if they are all that good for you.

Anything that grows naturally is healthy. Well, 98% of them. There are some berries that are poisonous. :D

Last week I snacked on strawberries. This week grapes. Grapes are awesome. Antioxidant properties, and chemicals linked to heart health, brain function, and blood pressure regulation. Had some mandarin orange for my after lunch snack. Vitamin C linked to immune system response and metabolism. Rock on.

I'll still have the occasional donut. But I'm backing way off that stuff now.

Well rock the fruit and keep snacking sounds like you got it figured out.
I could tell you why not to snack but that would be medical advice.

What about alcohol though? (I've seen your posts in the beer consumption thread)

Forget about the fruits. You might want to do some research on alcohol consumption and what it does to your health given that it's a known group 1 carcinogen.

Can’t question a drug because you’re not a doctor, but somehow people will say “find a good doctor”. How would you know a good doctor from a bad one without being a doctor yourself?
I consider a good doctor one that sits down, listens to you, answers all your questions and is not in a rush to get out the door.

I was just treated for cancer for the first six months of this year. My first major health crisis.

I found my doctors (approximately seven of them) amazing including just over a week ago. The doctor that will follow up with me for the rest of my life literally sat down and spoke to me for 45 minutes no agenda just a conversation about what’s to follow and answer my questions. It was an incredible experience.

Before I started radiation, another doctor, radiation specialist met with my wife and I in the examining room, clearly was not in a rush to get out, and as we had conversation with my wife and I, completely relaxed he actually jumped up and sat on the counter in the exam room and continue to speak to us again well over 30 minutes.

Before all this started, I went to Duke University and spoke with three specialist in their respective fields. Who’s only reason to speak with me and spend the morning with my wife and I was to review all my data and give us three different thoughts and opinions on the available treatments for me.

I know my experience may be different from others, but that’s the way I feel. The only letdown was what I feel was initially like completely incompetent doctor that if I wasn’t looking out for myself, I would’ve ended up with delayed treatment. I had to insist on him doing a biopsy, which turned out it was cancer. I caught it early, but it could’ve been another half year earlier. If he did a biopsy the first time I told him I wanted one After that, I was done with him and will never go back.

Depends. If the LDL is over 70 its a problem and I guarantee you at 185 the LDL will be 90+.

You can exercise til the cows come home and genetics trumps all that. I rad 30,000+ miles for 25 years. Ask me how I know.

Show me the statistically verifiable data.
Except for the extreme cases (morbidly obese) statins will shorten your life quicker than just meeting the medical professionals numbers. I stopped taking them 12 years ago. Still here (obviously) with practically the same numbers. Now that I’ve aged, my numbers are within the guidelines for my age (per medical professionals). While taking a statin, I continually had such sore joints and pulled muscles that I couldn’t exercise. How’s that going to help anyone’s overall longevity and health?
Show m e the data. I have a friend who at the age of 55 was taking a statin. He had sore joints in the morning so he stopped. Six years later he died of cardiac failure. He could have switched to a different statin. He refused to. Being bull headed cost him his life IMHO. Iwish we could stick to personal experiences instead of condeming or even lauding the drug in general. I have given real life examples in all my posts.

Doctors don"t cure they treat as there is no profit in cures. Maybe you need to wake up and educate yourself.

I feel sorry for you that you feel that way. It shows you "may" not have a good Doc. I go to a major Medical Center Internal Medicine Clinic. I have had my Doc for years when he was an intern. Today he oversees Docs and reviews their interactions with patients and approves a treatment plan. When I go see him he shows me pics of his kids. He is truly interested in my health. His wife is a Doc at the same clinic and he says she is better than he is. AND SHE is my wife's Doc. Again I'm sorry you are not getting the care you need.

^This Doc is up on the research and perscribed the 40 mg. of the statin. And his wife reduced the BP meds for my wife. Oh yea..he is pro active in getting my BP meds down to 1/4 of what they were. My normal BP is now 110/65. And my wife under her guidance takes only 10mg statin. Personal experience..no wild claims.

@alarmguy..we are both on exactly the same page

Right fair enough and I don't hide it and is my biggest crutch on a weekend I enjoy the Craft industry. I understand the side effects I'm in top health with diet and exercise I'm probably in better health than most for my age group I'm 52 most are not working out 5 to 6 days a week. And eat zero processed foods so after a workout or the possible rest day I may enjoy a beer.
I have zero issues with any of my numbers year after year and not seeking advice how to lower any of them .
