I don't remember those having the felt end caps.
This is what the fibrous sealing ring looked like on the OG Ultra to seal the leaf spring on the end cap. Also look how smooth the leaf spring stamping is where it seals on the sealing ring on the end cap.

The other difference is no side protrusions, which can and do keep the spring from fully seating. I saw it in the ph4967 I sacrificed.

That OG Ultra I posted actually has a tight fit of the leaf spring inside the ID of the fiber ring, so it's sealed on the side and the top of the ring ... like a double seal.
 
I too want a high quality filter each and every time. Full Stop.

With that said, I think "filter paranoia" is approaching "tire safety paranoia" lately.

I would have used that filter in a heartbeat.
I’d compare it to a long term restaurant patron - we understand that sometimes they have to raise the price to keep the standard …

Thinking a tire is "unsafe" with half the tread left, or being terrified of a used tire (what tires do you get when buying a used vehicle?), or thinking plugging a tire will result in mass casualties on the interstate, etc.

Don’t forget the oh so important break in oil change recommendation despite the full stable of high mileage used cars with zero evidence of any break in oil change being done.

Ever see a member gig a Carfax report for not having a break in oil change shown - me neither.

Zero evidence one way or another. My own is I have never owned an oil burner from doing a soft break in and early oil change. (even the motors often complained about). My last vehicle was $67k - so laugh all you want but you don't know anymore than the next guy on this subject.
Carfax will never be my North Star.

It isn’t about me thinking I know more than the next guy, it’s about me being as intellectually consistent as possible. I’m not perfect but I do try.

Like stated above, folks will freak out about old/used tires and the necessity of break in oil changes but then happily buy and recommend used car which have used tires and never had a break in oil change.

Once again, intellectual consistency.
 
I have never owned an oil burner and have always done "rougher" break in procedures on new engine builds / new vehicles. I will do this with two early oil changes.

To clarify "rougher" - for my procedure it looks something like this. Basically I want to get pressure on the rings asap. So on first startup once the engine is warm, I get on the throttle (approx 75%) and take it through gears 2, 3, and 4, and then slow down by engine brake with those same gears 4, 3, 2. I don't take it to redline or lug it during this. Just approx 75% throttle. Il do this a dozen or so times and then change the oil immediately, and then once more in 1,500miles.

That's about it. Just trying to get pressure on the rings asap and not be a fool about it, or pussyfoot about it either.

A common subject in the filter threads is they allow leakage. In fact some that mock that observation also mock the early oil change. I work fluid dynamics and we'd never consider metal to metal a seal unless it is both smooth and energized sometimes to the point of one metal coining the other. The poor quality finish of the new filters is all the more reason to do one early oil dump.

Once again, if this is truly important to ones decision-making process than a dealer only serviced certified used car doesn’t make any sense. New only would be the most intellectually honest conclusion if one is truly worried about such things. But that is often bashed around here by the depreciation police.

I can agree with you on that. Also why I never really bought into all the metal end cap hype.

I only buy new and was actually disappointed when the PF63E went to metal end caps.
(found 3 on eBay of the nylon/fiber series) ...
Champ was making better fiber end caps than Fram models for several years ...
