Fwiw, I've been thinking the exact same thing for a while now. And some c&p with media tears were quite small, and I don't recall statements like "still filtering more than not", and "filtration delayed is not filtration denied."Would you be OK with a tear in the filter media that let 10%-15% of unfiltered oil constantly through the filter?
My thoughts exactly. I often wonder if brand loyalty is to blame. It’s hard to accept a favorite has gone downhill. Wix was my go to for over 20 years before M&H bought them. Even after seeing the c&p’s here and by WCW it was hard for me to let them go. I went to OG Ultras and Titaniums next and then First Brands did the same thing. As a retired union member it’s very hard to buy a filter not made in the USA. But I had to accept better filters are being made overseas….it sucks I get it.Fwiw, I've been thinking the exact same thing for a while now. That said, anyone that wants/prefers to pay ~$13 for a "premium' filter that obviously allows oil bypass, their money and vehicle, their call.
They count on brand loyalty - and the fact that 98% won’t know they cut corners …My thoughts exactly. I often wonder if brand loyalty is to blame. It’s hard to accept a favorite has gone downhill. Cut a TG10575 recently (used) and it was mint - at least now that fiber end caps are back in fashionI might move to the Tough Guard. But at least the pleats/filter media look strong. My Vette is on its second Endurance.
Well after 43 pages of info in that thread I'm glad 5/6 of my vehicles have cartridges. Easier to see what's going on and trust the drain-back and bypass systems are well-engineered by the OEM without a QC concern was my take away. Not to mention a 900 post mega thread with dozens of different tests, measurements, and calculations done with detailed pics.
I don't believe I was whining about anything. Asking a reasonable question was all. And yes I prefer cartridge filters because they don't require all of this guess work and 900 post threads etc. to determine if they are ok to use. The buck stopped I guess/you really showed me?Yeah, when you start whining about how to know which filter is good, etc and how you prefer cartridges that’s when the buck stops
Even cartridges have their issues; some folks jist assume bad things don’t or won’t happen though
As of right now I’m no longer caring about this. Cartridges have failed and we have saw one on here. You have your opinion and that’s totally fine. Good bye nowI don't believe I was whining about anything. Asking a reasonable question was all. I'm very excited as I just learned about this whole fiber end cap thing. All my cartridge filters have them so didn't realize there was a choice
I’ve used Fram EG, TG or OEM (which tend to have fiber end caps) for 99% of DIY changes and never had an issue with them. Currently using Toyota N1’s on the Sienna with no plans to “upgrade” at the moment. I like me a good ol’ cheapo economy filter.I'm very excited as I just learned about this whole fiber end cap thing. I think the whining comment was the first shots fired in this thread. That was an unnecessary targeted escalation. Also you seem to have no qualms showing up to other people’s VRP threads and talking about how you don’t like VL’s marketing of the product.I’m about done cutting apart filters for folks who want to learn. Sick and tired of people coming in and derailing a thread. If I wanted to know about cartridge filters I’d post one or ask about them.
Yes, that’s very trueLouvers look open.
The Focus is all I have left that uses the cartridge style. I had no idea about all of this haha. Typically on that car (my son's now seeing 3-5K a year and one change) I just tried to use the blue "MP" STs ones for like $5 b/c I learned that they had a silicone drain-back valve which I read is better than the cheaper rubber ones. I guess I understand all the cutting apart and the various construction now but not seeing how anyone would really know. Is that the whole point of the date codes? So you check it and cross-ref these posts where you find a date range most likely to contain a filter that has the best construction? I got the Endurance b/c I figured I'd only change after the next 2-3 changes...which is actually pretty silly when we are talking about $5-10 but just wanted to say I did it haha. So I'm likely getting a bit of "blow by" on that valve is about what I took from this which in the end will make exactly zero difference for that car but sure, given a choice you always want that to be zero and being BITOG, we all strive for perfection in our lubrication journey.I’ve used Fram EG, TG or OEM (which tend to have fiber end caps) for 99% of DIY changes and never had an issue with them. Please don’t stop. To much value in what you do.I’m about done cutting apart filters for folks who want to learn. Sick and tired of people coming in and derailing a thread. If I wanted to know about cartridge filters I’d post one or ask about them.
