NEW FRAM ENDURANCE 3614 cut open

Well after 43 pages of info in that thread I'm glad 5/6 of my vehicles have cartridges. Easier to see what's going on and trust the drain-back and bypass systems are well-engineered by the OEM without a QC concern was my take away.

The Focus is 12 years old now at 135K and has been problem-free using mainly Motorcraft filters and in recent years Supertech 3614 filters (both white and the blue MP...whatever Walmart had with MP being preferred). I'm sure it will survive a few changes/10k miles on the potentially new leaky Fram 3614 Endurance I have is my conclusion from all of this but certainly interesting the differences. Now subbed to Whip City Wrencher's YT channel as well. Also learned the "OG" Ultra is the sought after BITOG filter to have.
It’s a good informative thread but did get overrun by a couple people with agendas.

I'm very excited as I just learned about this whole fiber end cap thing. All my cartridge filters have them so didn't realize there was a choice 🤣
Somewhere in the filter assembly is a bypass valve. I know they sell GM ones, so it must be someone replaces them. Toyota has a bypass in the filter cap. What these factory metal bypasses are bypassing maybe no one knows. More ingredients for the stew.

So then what is the attraction to the OG ones I see everyone here talk about now that I've spent some time in this sub forum? Just overall better quality?
Finding OG Ultras and Titaniums is getting nearly impossible these days. If it has the wire backing, you should be able to see it through the holes or louvers in the center tube.

Them burrs on the holes make me nervous.
It looks ugly, but it's just deformed metal - ie, not a clean hole punch job. Oil flow is not going to cause deformed metal like that to break off. I do however inspect every oil filter center tube to look for any obvious hanging fine slivers of metal that look like they could come loose in use.

I’m wondering whether these rusty filters are sitting on the shelf of a humid distribution warehouse before hitting the shelves. I don’t think I can blame the manufacturer but could blame the distribution. I’ve never seen rust but I’m in dry SoCal. I just took apart a new Synthetic Endurance FE4967. I have no qualms about the bypass valve since the competition, the OE Toyota Denso has the same leakage problem. This is the first filter I’ve opened with an opening spring pressure/behavior close to the Toyota OE. I was delighted with the valve spring pressure and behavior. But holy cow the pleats were sooooooooo asymmetric. Two areas of spread out wide pleats on opposite sides and then two areas where the pleats were sandwiched /packed so tight there was going to be limited flow at these areas. And narrow louvres. I’ve seen FRAM filters with much better formed louvre stampings. I hope management at FRAM /Champion reads this forum. We need lots and lots of social media outrage to get these companies to care about QC.

Based on specs and materials and the OE-like valve pressure and behavior (unlike the horrible single layer spring design of Purolator) and ISO testing data, the Synthetic Endurance would win. But it lost me on QC. I’ll stick to the 5 dollar leaky Toyota filter.

Having perused some of the threads about the Fram Endurance filters, is there a consensus on what is the forum's favorite filter at the moment? Stick with the stock filter?
