While some of the numbers may still be the basic and minimum but the pds is atleast complete and no OK values.

Good find! About time Castrol woke up.

Here's the actual link:

Link: Castrol

Well upon further inspection it looks like they didn't come around as much as I thought, still a lot of "Min" and "Max" values listed. Dummies.

Nice - thanks for posting. Interesting that the VI for the 0W-20 is significantly higher than for the 0W-40. Caterham may be able to shed some light on that.

At a quick glance why is the pour point so much better for the 0W30 and 0W40 than it is for the 0W20, 5W20, and 5W30?

Probably more PAO content.

Also, how I suspect Castrol views the "HTHS minimum" values instead of actuals:

That is interesting isn't it.
We've got a local brand called co-op. they re-brand lubricants but actually produce their own gasoline and diesel.
Anyways they've got a 0w-40 with a pour point of something nuts like -63. I've never seen any oil with a pour point that low and it states that its got a very high % of pao in it. 28 bucks a gallon too.
So dparm might be right in his assumption.

A 174 VI vs 169 for their 0W-40 isn't really a significant difference. Having a nominal 170 VI for any 0W-XX oil is par for the course. The purpose 0W-XX formulations that have high 185+ VIs is to be lighter at more typical start-up temp's.

I think the Castrol PDS info is still a disappointment. No actual HTHSV spec's except for GC . And no MRV or CCS spec's.

BTW the 159 VI for their 5w30 is one of the lowest VIs for the grade, worse than many dino's, meaning it's a heavy oil on start-up. It's very high CCS of 5,554cP (thanks to PQIA) is a further indication of how heavy this oil is compared to it's peers.
But it's also one of the cleanest burning oils available based on it's very low TEOST deposit score.

Of course neither the CCS nor TEOST score are provided on the PDS
of most companies. It just goes to show how limited the usefulness of most company PDS's are.

Doesn't an oil have to have an ht/hs value of 3.5 to meet that M-B spec?

Take another look, it says ACEA A1/B1 and no MB229.5. I think you're looking in the wrong column.

They really butchered the 0W20 from the SM to SN change, and that's what swung me back to Mobil 1 AFE. Just looking at their 0W20 pour point I see no benefit to using it at all. Opinions vary.

I'm not a big Castrol fan, but these formulations are probably very good. I'm going by some of the results from the Amsoil White Paper. (TEOST) in particular. I'd use any of these. Don't get fixated on VI.

I'll be sticking with Mobil/Valvoline products though.
