Edge 0W-40 or SHU 5W-40?

I am struggling to convince myself of the correct answer here, so any advice would be appreciated.

I have a few Focus RS (Mk2 and Mk3) and I look after a few Focus and Mondeo with the Volvo T5 engine.

All call for Ford WSS-M2C937-A 0W-40.

I’ve used Edge 0W-40 in these forever, but it’s getting expensive and surely there’s something better out there.

I can get SHU 5W-40 a little cheaper than the Castrol. Which would you pick?

I would choose the Shell product simply because you probably don't need an 0w-X in Australia and it's cheaper. Both oils have essentially the same approvals.

How cold it get there?

That Edge seems the fake synth edition. Good oil but nothing special if it's expensivier vs fake synth competitors. I'd use Shell HU 5w40 if cheaper.
Ford spec apart, you have cheaper and same or better oils as M1 0w40 FS, Motul X-Max 0w40, Shell HU 0w40, Elf/Total 9000 0w40, Petronas 7000 0w40 etc. Same for any 0w30 or 5w40 like Motul X-Cess, Meguin Megol etc

All that you mentioned falls into your category of "fake synth edition." Actually, Castrol 0W40 is less fake than most you mentioned.

Because that I said very clearly "cheaper and same or better", because all of them are.

About less fake obviously nop because it's impossible when product quality is similar and expensivier. Castrol 0w when not true synth or at least semi-synth (PAO) it's the more fake than most competitors than I said (example X-Max, Elf/Total or Petronas semi-synth and cheaper) and of course forget about 5w. Even Meguin Megol 5w40 is true synth and sometimes 50% price of Castrol 5w. No way.

Price/quality of Castrol when no full or semi-synth products is simply marketing, overpriced for no real reason. Like most brands they have good and meh products. I'd never use Castrol 5w or 0w fake synth overpriced, but yes 0w semi/true synth like 0w30/0w40 European B4/C3 or true synth trans oils (which I use). It's price/quality.

Do stores in Australia sell oil in jugs, for example 5-liters? In the US, we have 5-quart jugs available at much lower prices than 5 individual quarts.

Quaker State is unique to the US. It si American brand and only reason why Shell keeps it alive is brand loyalty.
Outside the US, no one heard of it and you cannot find it. Maybe some South American countries.
Quaker State is sold in Canada too except we don’t have the Ultimate Protection version here (I had to get mine from the US) The first oil that I ever used, back in 1986, was Quaker State conventional. (I think I used 10w40 in my 79 Mustang V6)

Thanks, I tend to agree.
Not better (equivalent) but cheaper. Quaker State Euro 5w-40. If it's available in your area.
Quaker State doesn’t exist in Australia.

Rarely below zero degrees C.

I’m leaning towards the Shell, too. M1 0W-40 in Australia is about 1.6x the cost of Castrol 0W-40, so not going to bother with that. Mobil 1 is incredibly overpriced in Australia. Same for Motul. Total 0W-40 is not API SP. Petronas 0W-40 is also too expensive to bother with.

Yes, 5L, 6L, 7L and 10L bottles are the most common way people here buy oil in stores. Very few people buy individual 1L bottles as $/L is significantly higher that way.

The Edge 0W-40 I usually buy in a 20L drum as it’s nearly half the price of buying 4x5L bottles for some reason.

the 0w-40 A3 contains about 50% Pao, the 0w-40R contains over 70% Pao

What in the name are you trying to say? They are not Semi-Synth oils. No MB229.5 or BMW LL01 can be semi-synth.
0W40 Castrol is at least 25% PAO, and the rest is a combination of AN's and Group III.
X-Max is at most 10% PAO.

-45C in Colorado?
Yeah. Gunnison Basin is the coldest spot in the lower 48. The record low was -51c. The record low in the lower 48 was in Montana, -61c. But on average, Gunnison Basin, some 1 1/2 hours from my place, is the coldest. It can drop below freezing in summer.
It is basin, surrounded by very high peaks, above 4km. The super cold air drops from those peaks West from Basin, and cold air lingers there as it can't escape due to mountains to the East.
On any ski resort, -20 is normal temperature in January, February and March.
