I have a small workshop in Melbourne, Australia and I specialise in Focus XR5/ST/RS (as well as Fiesta ST and Mondeo XR5), so I use a lot of Castrol Edge 0W-40, as that is one of the few oils which meets Ford WSS-M2C937-A, required for the Volvo 5cyl in the Focus XR5, Mondeo XR5 and LV Focus RS. It is also specified for the LZ Focus RS with the 2.3L EcoBoost.

Between my last 20L drum order and today’s, it looks like Castrol Australia has finally run out of the SN formulation and I’ve got a new SP drum!

A few interesting things I’ve noticed:
- it’s no longer Castrol Edge Professional A3 0W-40, but rather Castrol Edge 0W-40 A3/B4 (it’s lost ‘professional’ from its name).
- It has gained BMW LL-01
- It has lost Porsche A40

I’ve attached photos of the two drums (one SN and the other the new SP) and both PDS docs. Interested in your thoughts of the two oils. Cheers.

I would guess less PAO,*smg*, no again Castrol!

Would love to know how does the new blend perform, sorta want to try the new one for the next OC

If you look at the International PDS the Porsche spec is there (this is a newer PDS too):

The funny thing is this is an api sp and acea a3b4 - and much the same in the current Mobil1 0w40 on sale in India. Why not make the ACEA spec C3 as well?

Castrol Edge in India 0w40 is these but no ford spec that I can see, and SN instead of SP, not that a C3 oil is going to hurt that engine

  • ACEA C3
  • API SN
  • dexos2TM*
  • FIAT 9.55535-S2
  • MB - Approval 229.31/229.51
  • Porsche A-40
  • Renault RN0700/RN0710
And then they release a castrol magnatec oil in sp/c3 but no oem approvals. Nice looking oil for the price.

SP has lowered Calcium and higher Magnesium.
Does the barrel state that the new SP formula is for Gasoline Engines? Does it (ex)clude Dexos2?.
Just curious!

The B4 is for diesel engines. I see now you edited your diesel, nevermind!
Catching things late is still better than never catching anything again.
I hope the SP Castrol Euro 0w40 makes it's way to the USA and Walmart. The Mobil-1 AFE 0w40 in SP is standing alone there currently.

I see Malaysia and Signapore now have gold labeled Mobil-1 Triple Action 0w40 in SP. Would be nice to see the USA and Walmart grab that one also. In order to get here, the package(s) recipes may have to be tweaked.

B4 is for diesels that don’t have dpf or similar emissions control tech. What is the point of providing that spec except for older vehicles?
Well I guess we could say the same for A3, albeit to a lesser extent :)

Maybe it's a case of "because they can", because the oil meets it and it doesn't hurt to put it on the sticker. Maybe it's because in some countries it can still be a relevant spec? Or maybe they consider the older vehicle market strong enough to warrant keeping it.
I wonder how many new vehicles specify A3 oil? As the ACEA keeps A3 and B4 as current specs (are they still?), there's probably a market, or nothing superseded these yet.

Well - at least in India they only mandated dpf / scr since 2020 so plenty of older cars that still work fine with an older spec like a3b4

However it seems weird to provide an oil that is suitable for newer gas cars but not for newer diesels,
