We tested the armor after the war.

WOW! + Ouch! Thanks for posting. Never heard of that story. I will looking into it. Along with being an automotive nut/addict.... I
am also a life long history buff. This is right up my alley. Can't count the sighs I have heard when the wife walks in the room and sees I have some history or mechanical channel on the tube.

Looks like it will be heavily armed, not a fan of the name but America needs such a capital warship able to defend herself while projecting power

Three 64-cell Mark 41 VLS banks
One CPS hypersonic launch bank
Two 21-cell RAM launchers
Two high power lasers
Four SEWIP Block III modules
One railgun
Two Mark 45 guns
Outsized SPY-6 arrays

We are all depending on the continuing advancement of technology.

But what if.....

Something everyone saw coming but decided to ignore, happened such that we could no longer put in orbit or use satellites.
How far back would the world be set back if all nations lost access to not only orbital devices, but lost access to ALL ability to launch anything?

Maybe in such a scenario some of the older tech...like F-14 Tomcats, the SR-71 and even battleships might once again become not only necessary, but effective in that new, limited communications capability environment?

It all reminds me of that Star Trek episode where the energy weapons of the future were useless against a particular foe.....but old fashioned ballistic weapons worked just fine.

Perhaps some here picture something from the past that’s not going to happen. Some are triggered by two names - one being “battleship” for a large combative warship we know little of …

The Mighty Mo was very effective in the GW but it’s seriously old school and to expensive to upgrade & return to service

I’ve been on the Iowa a couple times and was really impressed up close and personal

Look at what China is doing, how they are challenging Philippines over islands & waterways

Yes the WWII battleship is history but a new one, faster & heavily armed able to defend herself against airborne threats while taking the fight to other surface combatants is needed

America is retiring her missile cruisers & that’s leaving a huge gap in offensive missiles

The new FFX frigate seems to be under armed, a expensive target

I see those overseas - and GMD - pretty small especially when a WASP is in port …
We will know more soon …

Was on NAS North Island when the Bonhomme Richard fire happened & that was a sad ending to her

Not practical one drone one missile one torpedo one mine can take out that ship.
Didn't work out that way near the Red Sea with all the Houthi drone and missile attacks. And the Navy is pretty adept at dealing with mines these days.

Besides that. Friggin' lasers are coming. These ships appear to have an abundance of electrical generating ability to power them, along with the rail guns.

Ukraine took out a Russian sub with a underwater drone

Battleships have been irrelevant since the middle of world war 2 once they realized the aircraft carrier is way more powerful and useful
They are calling it a battleship because it could displace up to 40k tons. I read somewhere between 30k and 40k. Really it's weight class is more a heavy cruiser, but looking at today's warships and their lack of displacement, I think it is probably fitting to call it a battleship. I think the Missouri's were 60k tons.

So many opinions. So few based in the reality of what was announced today.

We are not talking about the Iowa class - we are talking about a large, heavily armed, surface combatant.

This warship: https://www.goldenfleet.navy.mil/

MK-41 VLS can carry everything from Tomahawk Cruise missiles, to SM-6 Surface to air missiles, to SM-3 Anti-satellite missiles (and, in Case you missed it, the USS Lake Erie shot down a satellite in 2008) and several other types of missiles.

The large missile magazines offer new capabilities. Railguns are an impressive capability, with a range of roughly 200 miles and large magazine capacity, they bridge the gap between conventional guns and directed energy weapons, which this ship will also have.

So, if you want to talk about what was announced today, stick to the topic of what was announced today, not some off topic misconception about bringing back the Iowa class.

It looks kind of stealth?

And I quote: "They'll be the fastest, the biggest, and by far 100 times more powerful than any battleship ever built," Trump claimed during the announcement at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida."

So what is a civilian supposed to think?

I’m rather surprised they are not nuclear powered
