The ACEA C5 spec - which is a mid-saps oil with a HTHS viscosity in the range from ≥ 2.6 to ≤ 2.9 mPa*s
Thanks to its very low viscosity and outstanding fluidity this oil significantly reduces wear, provides higher fuel savings and lower CO2 emission
 
M1 0W-8 has been common stock for the past few months at our local WalMarts...and it is all big trucks around here mostly.
 
Toyota has long been known for offering long lived cheapies.
This Corolla will be no exception.
Yeah, we all know about MOFT as well as that other locations may have thicker grades recommeded, but does anyone really believe that Toyota would jeopardize their carefully nurtured narrative of offering cheap long-life cars by recommending a grade of oil that would bring early engine death?
Another thought is that while thicker grades may be recommended in other market for what would seem to be the identical engine, tunes may vary and it would not be too hard for Toyota or any other manufacturer to program a US market Corolla to do just fine on a 0W-8 by carefully tailoring the software to avoid subjecting the engine to edge cases of performance in which the grade might not be equal to the task.

The engines that specify 8 and 16 hot grade oils have been mechanically designed to live with those thin oils. I'm sure those engines will still redline under full HP loads regardless of how the ECU is programmed. The RPM and loads on the lubricated parts is were the HTHS and MOFT matter in terms of adequate protection. And those parts can be mechanically designed to tolerate thinner oils. The 8 and 16 hot grades have their own ILSAC GF designation and logo on the bottles for a reason. Not be used in anything that's not designed to work with it.
 
The manual does say you can use 0W-16 but it must be changed to 0W-8 at the next change.
Toyota also said this about 0w-16 that 20 could be used but must be switched back to 0w-16 at the next oil change. Do you see a pattern Toyota has created. They are the masters of writing contradiction. 🕳️🐇

They said that to try and appease CAFE and be compliant. If 0W-20 can be left in for a full OCI, then it can be used all the time.
