GEEZ! why didn't you view the before pic and retake a better one since you said you didn't get a good pic? This would have been a really good test.

The 'test' would have been more valid if the first pic did not have a thumb over the lens.

I don't think anyone doubts that a solvent will clean things up.

But it's the dino that caused it? Not a known inferior PCV system and an engine that runs internally hot? [not coolant temp]

Those two pictures show NOTHING happening. The difference in the flash getting into the fill hole vs not, is the only difference I can tell.

I enjoy threads that document our experiments well. I just don't see anything here (yet!).

This is exactly what I was thinking.

I'm neutral on Kreen. I've never used it and I don't really have an opinion.

But, those photos show nothing that can prove or disprove Kreen works.

Give it time, more pictures will be coming as I update the thread. I knew the before shot was going to be a problem for someone here, I thought I explained that pretty well in my first post. But you do have an open mind since you used the word "yet". I was reluctant to even start this thread for that reason. Problem is I only had one chance at the before shots, I took them and poured in the Kreen. Hopefully the future pictures will be better. There was a noticeable difference looking down the fill hole, but not everyone will believe me. So more to come, good bad or otherwise.

If you did not take "before" pictures of the valve train, I cannot see how any future pictures will prove anything.

Second pic look like poop

Honestly the pictures are useless.

You'll have progression pictures, in fact you can even use the second picture as a before picture, after all it was only 61 miles later, I still have a long way to go to have Kreen in the sump for 1,000 miles. I'm not pulling a valve cover, no way no how.

The second picture did look bad, but a lot better than the first. As far as the pictures being useless, you're entitled to your opinion. If enough people dump in this thread I won't post in it anymore, the Kreen competition would love that. lol

Not dumping. I actually like good old fashioned Kano products. Just can't tell much from the pics. Another opinion, I'd be looking at a dump and remake with a fresh filter right about now. Just saying.

You lost me. I was planning on running Kreen for the last 1,000 miles of the OCI. The first picture in a word SUCKED. I can't change that, so we can use the second picture as a first picture for those who want to do that.

Here's where you lost me. What would a dump and remake with a fresh filter accomplish? BTW if my tone is somehow confrontational that is not my intention here.

This could end up taking more than one Kreen treatment to clean it up. I drove about another 50 miles tonight, I'll have a peek in the morning.

I would just want to get that yuck (poop) out of my engine. It looks really nasty. I know we can't go by looks, but that can't be good. I would just do an oil change and re-Kreen. But if your intent is to carry on with this run, then do so. I'm just saying what I would do.

I got you now. That oil had around 3000 miles on it prior to adding the Kreen. I was planning on 5K conventional OCI's with the car, but wanted to Kreen it and change the oil before the cold weather sets in. I might cut my OCI's to 4000K miles on this car, but the way its used will be different, so that's still up in the air.

As a side note to this thread as I mentioned in my first post, this car was well maintained and saw 3K conventional OCI's, the use was severe service. Seeing is believing, and conventional oil IMO didn't do a good job keeping this engine clean for less than 85K miles. The PCV system is working well. As mentioned there was no sludge.

If the oil gets really funky I might shorten the Kreen run to 500 miles and repeat again after another 3,000 miles. I really don't like the color of that garbage either.

BTW they claim color of oil doesn't matter, or does it?????????? It sure looks like poop. lol

If you had an oil pressure gauge, wouldn't you be able to tell when the filter was getting clogged by the drop in pressure reading? I would think it might be a way to avoid changing out oil and filter too soon,no?

Based on second picture I would at least try to siphon few ounces from the dipstick tube after a good run of 20-30 minutes (using your Mityvac). Then you can easily see the condition of the oil, then you might want to shorten the Kreen run to 500 miles.

OT: Since it is hard for us Californian to get Kreen, I'm using 1 oz Lubegard engine flush in my 140+k miles E430 now, I did 1 drop oil blot before added Lubegard and again after 120 miles, the color after is somewhat darker than before. I continue monitor the oil color and will change no later than 400-500 miles with Lubegard in the oil. The engine has an oil fill extender about 3-4" high and a baffle at the bottom of the extender, it's impossible to see anything behind the baffle.

Not a bad idea. There is enough oil that pools in the head to draw off a few ounces, then I don't have to clean the miti-vac. Those baffles make seeing anything impossible, and pulling a valve cover that is not leaking IMO is not happening, at least for me. This engine was perfect for through the fill tube pictures.

Possibly, this car is equipped with the standard Idiot light though, and a low oil level warning light.

My intention is hopefully not to have this car too long, although it runs extremely well. It looked like a perfect candidate for Kreen, and I had 1.5 qts of it.

The more I think of it the more I'm leaning toward what Pablo had said earlier, which was my thinking from the beginning. Reading here sometimes leads you to believe that in just about all instances Conventional oil is good for more than 3,000 miles, so I figured a 4K run was a safe bet. I think as with any rule there are exceptions, this might be one of them. I might still shorten the run with Kreen to 500 miles which would be a safe bet too.

Another thought would be this, I'm open to opinions and suggestions too.

1. Stick with the original plan.

2. How about I keep this run going until I've logged 500 miles with the Kreen in the sump, then dump the oil and run a fresh fill for 2,500 miles, add Kreen for the last 1,000 miles? Total run on the oil and filter would be 3,500 miles.

3. Dump the oil add Kreen and run the fresh fill with Kreen for 1,000 miles and dump it? That would bring me to where I would have been time wise with the original plan, and have the oil and filter changed before it gets too cold here? My OCI had me leaning toward this after I keep my original brew in for 500 miles.

While I wouldn't take her to the track with it in the crankcase, I have seen nothing here IME to indicate that Kreen will do any harm in a 1000 miles of normal usage.
