Greetings fellow mixologists. Couple questions fer ya. This will be my first shot using Kreen. Does it really make your Hair more manageable? Sorry, here's my application: 2002 Suburban 5.3 175k , Peering down into the valve cover I see what I think is varnish (gold coloring) and a hint of darker oily spots (sludge?) So here are my questions: 1. If used as directed, would you feel safe using this product? 2. Is 1000 miles about right for duration in the sump? 3. What type and weight of oil would you reccomend to use with Kreen? 4. What brand of oil filter would be best for this? Just for good measure I am running a 1k oci with Super Tech 15w40 prior to the Kreen Application. Thanks for any input.

1: No.

2: See #1.

Use a high quality oil with esters for a few short OCIs

Fully formulated oils have all the necessary additives.

Follow the instructions and you're good to go. There are many happy kreen users on this site.
Pm Trav. He's an automotive expert and has used kreen in many different engines. If you message him explaining what you're seeing I'm sure he'd be happy to share his insight.
Engines are his living so if anyone can help fine tune your plan he's the guy.
You're going to get the token posts from a few naysayers which I suggest you just ignore. Kreen is a product that many professionals here use themselves which says a lot about the stuff.
If possible can you get any pics of before and post them. And of course the after pics as well. This site loves visuals. We are like rabid dogs when cut open oil filter pics get posted.

Hehehe.

I have also used Kreen in about a dozen different vehicles. It is an amazing cleaner, and surprisingly good for the fueling system as well. Kreen works with any oil and filter, just plan a shortened interval.

What Clevy said, you'll avoid the naysayers, get valuable info from a true professional. He's used several cleaning products over the years, and will point you in the right direction and save you valuable time and money with your cleaning project. You're off to a great start with the Kreen.

I have never used it, but have read many positive stories on here.

My question is... 15w40?

. I had some Super Tech 15w40 left over fromlastsummer. I just used it for a 1k oci cleanup run, I'll be dumping it this weekend. During the Kreen application should I go up one grade and run something like Mobil 1 0w-40 just for a little extra protection? How about changing the oil filter after 500 miles of cleaning? Thanks again

I used it to try to clean a ticking lifter. No luck, but doesn't mean it's a bad cleaner. Solvent flushes aren't everybody's thing, but it was clear from pouring it in that it had cleaning power.

It doesn't sound like you have any issue that requires any cleaning faster/ beyond what good quality oil would achieve.

Have you got a specific concern beyond what you see? Do you think varnish and sludge are mechanically interfering with engine performance?

What is it that you're trying to achieve?

Like Trajan and many others advise on this forum, good oils are formulated to clean and keep clean, and gentle cleaning, with formulated oil, is the safest approach.

Good point. The very nature of the product means it will many times be used in 'hopeless' cases as well. Nothing is proven by the failures. It can't possibly fix everything.

Kreen is a fantastic, powerful cleaner that has been around for decades. Fully guaranteed by a company that actually stands behind its warranty and will refund you every penny if you don't like it.

Just bear this and the other t&c's in mind if you buy Kreen:

Thanks for the feedback. Going thru the svc records, the oil change history seemed a little weak. Inconsistent milage, jiffy lube, Midas etc... Then seeing the oil tube gunk, I got a little worried. I will remove the oil filler tube and get a closer look into the engine thru the valve cover. Then In a few days, I will dump this oil and try to cut the filter open. Hopefully, with these observations I can make a more informed decision. Without a special tool, is the old hacksaw method about the best approach ?
