Doesn't seem like a troll he's been registered there for years. He finally got around to changing the oil and the car seems to be running fine. I think he kept it alive by using synthetic and just topping off? But then stopped the last 10 or 20k.

Edited to add photo of timing chain.

If this is true ?? Here is one time having a 8 quart oil capacity helped !

I bought a van, had 100K on the clock and was in to the jiffy every 3K, then I change it religiously every 30K for the next 120 till the car was junk, engine ran just like it always did. I own 1 engine I change every year, its a 3.9 in a pickup and looks like crap a day later. The rest of them get it if and when I service for something else, old van I drive gets it at 25K on dino and looks like new. Can see thru the dipstick at 15.

I feel bad for letting my wife's Crosstrek get to 10K before an oil change. It was the required synthetic oil and a NAPA Platinum filter. The main reason was it was cold and snowy outside. And I thought it was more like 8K miles since last oil change. I do keep the maintenance on a spreadsheet but had not looked at it in awhile.

something for $100 but when neglected can cost an engine .... risk i do not want to take. I am old school 5,000 miles or 1 year which ever come first.

This type of neglect will always occur. We cringe at it, while others don't. The same can be said for any type of maintenance such as home repairs etc.

Some of these old clunkers was cheaper and easier to simply add and drive, it wouldnt have got an engine if it did jamb up which it didnt. Could have changed it every 50 miles and car wouldnt have went an inch farther.
I just pulled a sample I am going to send, we will see, 15 years and 1000 hours maybe more. Was running on LP though. It came in for other work, got a change and was in way better shape than we thought it was.
I am not a never change guy but we come a long way since we started and everyone had an anxiety attack when it hit 3K. I got to love the rationale that,,,, its cheaper than a new engine" which it is but its no guarantee that nothing is gonna go wrong if we obsess over the oil. My neighbor girl change every other week and it spit up an engine despite the constant fuss and worry and mine I change on occasion still running fine 10 yrs later.
There are a few engines are problematic, no argument there but most could go 30 or 40K as long as they not ran out,,, especially if they need some added.

If he went 50K without ever changing the oil,I wonder how many years that equates to? That just blows my mind.

I'm not surprised. I'm sure it's got accelerated wear but I would not expect it to fail unless he raced it.

I can see him on a bitog thread now arguing with the 3k OCI crowd... "I've got 49k on my latest OCI and all is fine. I say go for it."
