Motorcraft MTF

the link didn't work, but if this is Motorcraft Full Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid Part # XTM5QS, a number of the folks on miata.net with the 6 speed have used this to good effect. i believe the miata 6spd and the S2000 one are both Aisin units.

it is GL4, german, has FM in it and is 18 bucks a qt list at your local ford dealer...what's not to love?

It really isn't anything special. It is not a GL4, only says that it is suitable where GL4 is specified. It is essentially a 10W40 synthetic motor oil (probably group III) with a very high TBN. It is actually a Castrol product that isn't available as Castrol in the US. Ford specified itfor sludge control on the Contour MTX75 trans. It is actually very low in friction modifiers.

On the Contour MTX75 it works very well (I have one and have this fluid in it at the moment). Over at Contour.org the preferred fluid for this trans is Royal Purple (I don't remember the actual name of the fluid, but it is a manual trans fluid, syncroshift or something similar). It's funny, Royal Purple specifies their synthetic 10W40 motor oil for this trans.

On the Contour trans, RedLine MTX has proven unsatisfactory, generating heavy sludge that eventually clogs the lubrication channels in the spyder gears.

Other fluids that work well in that trans include Torco (I don't remember which product).

The point is the Motorcraft fluid is light or missing in friction modifiers and has nothing to to provide EP protection. You can easliy do better.

supposedly this is made by Fuchs of germany, not castrol. it has plenty of FM in it.

are you sure we are talking about the same product?? the ford guys (and the TSB) refer to it as "transmission honey" because of the gold color. ford went to it because of shifting problems in their Getrag transmissions.

I do not believe that the new MOtorcraft tranny fluid is a motor oil any more than any other manual trans fluid, so discussing it as such is inappropriate.

I used it for about 35,000 in my 1996 Contour 5 speed MT after I changed the factory Mercon ATF at 30,000 miles. It ran great and shifted much better than the factory Mercon ATF. And yes, the earlier Contour manual tranny's, pre 2000's, came with Mercon ATF, at least in the non SVT versions. It wasn't until 2000 that the factory fill became the synthetic mtf.

I now have Royal Purple Syncromesh(?)mtf in there and it shifts just fine. In between I went and had the Ford dealer change the mtf and asked for the Ford synthetic mtf. They put in Mobil 1 ATF

! They just changed ownership and all the service people were "new". They were total dumbies. After about 5000 miles I got a chance to change the mtf and went with the Royal Purple Syncromesh. The Mobil 1 ATF shifted fine, in the summer and fall, changed it before winter. I understand that the use of ATF will eventually cause shifting problems. As mentioned, the info is on one of the Contour sites.
