I couldn't believe my eyes. I passed a Quick Lube place and saw a new generation BMW 7-series pull out. Three Questions:

1. DO they even have filters and oils that are BMW approved?
2. Why on earth would that owner go to a quick lube?
3. Did he/she steal it?

I was in shock...

Was waiting at Walmart getting my flat fixed and a guy comes in with his BMW 3 series. He said he wanted an oil change with just the regular cheap oil, the girl behind the counter said they do not stock a filter for it but if he runs to Advance and gets a filter they can do it for him. He said he loved getting it done there because it is so cheap and he only has to have it changed every 15K.

I saw a Porsche 911 at a Valvoline Instant Oil Change place getting oil straight from the drums.

Yep.

I saw a brand new Masersati Quattroporte Sport GT S in a pep boys for tires. Turns out he was able to buzz a set of rears before he hit 100 miles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The sad part was the guy was flipping when they told him the tires would take 2-3 days to come in.

I just face palmed and suggested he have it flat bed towed to F.C. Kerbeck & Son's accross the bridge in Jersey. They would more than likely have the tire, or know how to get it within a day or two and they were used to working on high end autos.

He said whos going to pay for that?

And again, I face palmed. . . . .

A bunch of knuckle heads man.

There are a LOT of people out there right now who are hurting financially and after 4 years of hurting don't realize they need to downsize, rightsize, and slim down the type of toys they drive.

I have only put 1000 miles on my truck in the past 10 months, and I forgot why until I filled it up today. I too have taken a hit due to the economic fiasco, and I don't know of anyone who has been left out of it.

I'm not surprised to see BMW's and Mercedes in the line at Quick Lube joints.
Most people buy those cars for the looks. They have no idea what they actually purchased and don't care about the capabilities that the purchase has. All they care about is looking important.

Even if their house is foreclosed upon... at least they will look cool.

(BTW, if this sounds like you please check out Dave Ramsey.)

i used to work at one and i bet the most expensive costumer cars were the super duties. i think retail on a F450 is around 60k
bt we had some vets come threw too

yep yep and probably not.
one thing about a quick lube is they will never have to worry about sludge because a bmw gets the same 5k sticker all the other synthetic changes get

what really bumms me out is when someone brings in a turbo car and insists on bulk. the always get a big note on the receipt that says NO WARRANTY-WRONG OIL lol

You got it all wrong! It was the owner leaving to deposit money made on unnecessary services to his bank!

Not an expensive car, but kinda related:

>Mk III Jetta pulls into a wal-mart for an oil change
>Tech takes about five minutes trying to open the hood
>After finally getting it open, he turns around, and the thing slams shut
>Guy behind the counter, who ringing up the sale the whole time, "Yeah, we don't work on a lot of German cars."
>MFW

I saw a Dinan-upgraded 5 series BMW going down the highway last week with the front tires bobbing up and down like a basketball. The car looked great, and it was mighty sad to see a car whose owner is only interested in what the car looks like and it oblivious that the shocks have deteriorated to the point of being dangerous.

Don't forget that the cars might not be nearly as expensive as you might think. There are a lot of neglected, high-mileage 3 series out there for $4000-6000. A 2002+ 7-series can be had for around $10,000 if you don't mind that it's junk. Clearly, a lot of people don't!

No one would think twice about a $45,000 Suburban pulling into walmart, but are shocked by a $7500 BMW?

Because 9x out of 10 that quick lube/walmart is going to have the oil and oil filter spec'd for that Suberban. And 10x out of 10 there going to have the tools to work on it.

Cant say that about 911's, 7 series, S class's, ect. . . .

I wouldn't know.
I don't hang out at such disreputable places.

+1

Probably a $40k SUV or minivan.

Lots of folks DIY around me since it's far cheaper. Then again, most folks around me drive old cars since the industrial economy up here has been in the toilet since about 1975. A new car is a luxury. The farmers are doing all right, and have some shiny new F-series or Rams since those are the two dealers in town.

I once saw a Mercedes E350 in a Pennzoil Quick Change place. (May have been an E320). Reason I noticed it was because the oil filter is located on top of the engine, so the Pennzoil guy unscrews the filter, then rather drain the oil from under the car, they had a special pump that sucks the oil out from the dip stick hole. This was a large pump, on its own wheels, not like the small pump I use on the end of my drill. Don't know what grade of oil they used, but I know that this place does have some good synthetics.

BTW, on their sign in front of the business, it says:

"We Fix Cheap Oil Changes".
