Mobil 1 Undeserved Bad Reputation?

He has been pushing Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra Platinum lately.
He talks about how Pennzoil uses a better Moly and add pack then mobil but they co-own infinium. He also believes that a better ad pack equals a better oil. Clueless

Wouldn't it depend on which M1 product? I'm aware that Mobil 1 Euro approved oil is good as are most or all brands of Euro approved oil. I'm also aware that Mobil 1 Truck and SUV is good. Maybe also M1 High Mileage, though I'm skeptical of that one vs other brands of High Mileage oils. But can we really say that regular M1 is awesome?
I was an M1 user (of regular M1). I had a couple of valid reasons I switched to Valvoline Maxlife High Mileage and might in future switch to Quaker State High Mileage FS or Quaker State Ult Protec FS.
If you like M1, there are also several other good brands at similar or less prices. I've seen tests where Supertech performs as well as regular M1.
If people are going to criticize or praise M1, it would be a good idea to say which version(s) of M1 they're referring to, IMO.
My personal opinion is that regular M1 is an average oil. I think some other specific versions of M1 are rather good.

He is posting for clickbait replies. What a joke threads like this are. Mobil 1 is a serviceable motor oil. PERIOD!
M1 kicked my dog, knocked up my daughter and took money off the dresser. A bad seed that M1.

First of all, I don't know what the OP means by bad reputation, and I wasn't saying that regular Mobil 1 is bad oil. I do however suspect it's average oil and not ideal for my needs.
Project Farm had his motor oil Olympics. Probably none of you would be surprised that Amsoil won and PUP was second. You'd probably think that makes sense, and I'd agree. In those same tests, regular Mobil 1 & regular Supertech were ranked middle of the pack - average oils. Nothing wrong with average, especially since these were Mobil 1 & Supertech base products.
I was an Mobil 1 user for 10+ years of regular Mobil 1 10w30. It was OK, but nothing special as far as I could tell. It gave slightly less oil pressure in my Jeep & Buick, and lost/used slightly more oil, compared to Maxlife.
I'm not saying regular Mobil 1 is bad oil. I'm just saying it's average, IMO. That's OK because Walmart sells it for average prices.
The various Youtube oil testers that I've seen said its average, along with also some who said it's good. The only person who used the word "bad" is the OP who is probably click baiting us (and it's working).

If you buy into PF oil testing - you need to think twice.
Very few products are as globally tested as lubricants …

I put absolutely no stock in these "tests", which is why I asked if this was the metric being used. They are for entertainment only, this is why the API, ACEA and OE test sequences consist of numerous tests performed with running engines, from different manufacturers, followed by tear-downs with inspection and measurements, because that's what's required.
Oil pressure is the result of kinematic viscosity, and since oil grades are ranges of KV values, I'm not sure what the oil pressure is supposed to tell us beyond the fact that it may have been a bit thinner than Maxlife. This is also consistent with it leaking or consuming more, if it was thinner for the grade.
Right, and I was trying to discern what this was based on, whether it was Youtube circus acts, physical or chemical properties or actual tear-down testing. I'm seeing now that it's primarily, and unfortunately, the former.
The only person on Youtube that has done any kind of quality testing is LSJ, and that's when he was using HPL's lab to test things like shear stability.
Unfortunately, one cannot discern product quality from whether it has price parity with another brand or not. Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 for example, is no more expensive than any other Mobil 1 grade, but, at the time, was the best performing OTS oil that HPL had tested in their lab, per Dave, and it got his recommendation because of that. This was also the oil used in the Corvette Race Program and by various teams at 24hr events like LeMans and Sebring. I'd assume those are both more demanding than your application?
Before EP and AP, Mobil 1 silver bottle was their flagship product line with "Mobil Super" being their mid-tier offering. This would be their current "Supertech Synthetic" equivalent:

Ultimately, we all have our preferences and, given the dearth of qualitative test data, it's typically pretty hard to substantiate any sort of claim that one might base those preferences on. What we do have are manufacturer approvals, and the limited amount of test data that folks like Dave and LSJ have provided, which is hardly exhaustive and only covers a small range of products.
Was digging around in the hatch back area of my '99 Camaro SS this past week and ran into an old spare quart bottle of Mobil 1 5w30 API SN that had to have been there for years. Guess it will end up in my lawn mower now as I've been using Mobil 1 0w-40 FS for a while now.

It’s a bit ridiculous when you read Facebook groups or car forums that bad mouth Mobil 1 because it becomes painfully obvious that many people are completely clueless regarding what makes a good oil. While I admit that I don’t think that the “vanilla” M1 is all that special and previous versions were better (such as the old Tri Synthetic formula) it’s also not a terrible oil and I believe it’s a better choice over the bargain synthetics (Kirkland, Supertech, etc). But the higher tier offerings in the M1 lineup are very good oils that are readily available at a reasonable price, I’m talking about ESP and the Truck & SUV formulas.
But the worst thing is when someone makes a fancy YouTube video that tells people that M1 is terrible and so many people believe that kind of garbage. Just because someone has the ability to make a YouTube video that looks “flashy” doesn’t mean that they are any kind of oil expert. A friend sent me a video like this a few days ago and I watched about two minutes of it before laughing and shutting it off
