Packaging and Claim Changes on Mobil 1 Truck and SUV

I had a leftover jug of Mobil 1 Truck and SUV oil I'd gotten at Walmart a year ago. When I heard about spotty stocking on this oil, which I use for low mileage annual OCIs, I figured I'd grab a couple more. For a few weeks Walmart was out of stock, but when it returned to their online store at the regular price for home delivery, I ordered 2.

Anyway, I noticed the packaging looked a little different. We all know that's not unusual in that industry, so I didn't think much about it until I looked closer. Although they have the same product number, the claims on the jugs vary, some of them drastically so. I'm curious if this product changed on paper or if they altered the formula. If so, is it still as shear stable as it was? Hard to say without a VOA, but I figured I'd share regardless. For reference, the older jug is the one with earth tone labeling and the new one is in black and white labeling.

I found this quote in another tread about Mobil 1 dropping PAO in another of their oils. It might be related...

I just noticed Mobil 1 Truck and SUV Kinematic Viscosity @ 100 C is now 9.75 from 10.0.

This too, from Mobil 1. Not sure what that's necessarily supposed to mean:

you know what my Cheerios box doesn't look the same as when I was a minnow

I wish I had saved copies of the most recent datasheet before the reformulation in May. Prior to that it still had compelling figures like really low pour point and really high flash point. Now both are mediocre and the viscosity is down.

That labeling change is from before the May reformulation that worsened the oil.

Has Mobil reformulated a lot of their oils recently? First it was advanced clean changing?

IIRC if you look up the PDS of any of their oils they are all dated May 13 2026, and all the figures are inferior to the preceding datasheet. It seems like they ended up changing to inferior base stocks due to the oil shortage in all their products.

I went to Walmart and O'Reillys to pick up several jugs of truck and suv and advanced clean, checking the date codes were March or earlier to try and predate the reformulation.

Like I mentioned in my post, I'm curious how the shear stability is affected by the formula change. Rarely do they "improve" a product out of the goodness of their hearts. The more rational explanation is usually skimpflation.

mphilleo, you did not ask (and you may already know this) but you and others might be interested in knowing the manufacturing dates based on the lots numbers printed on your bottles.

The oil in the older bottle was from July 10, 2025. The oil in the newer bottle is from April 2026 (sorry, I can't make out the day of the month from your picture).

It's also interesting to know that both of them came from the same plant.

Seems a number of Mobil 1 labels have changed. Perhaps a new label supplier? Mobil 1 ESP 0W30 has a different shade of green on the current batch of 5-liter jugs at Walmart. Can't see any other differences from memory.
