First, find out what the source of the oil consumption is. Valve-stem oil seals? Rings? PCV valve? Leaks?
Valve-stem oil seals: Use 5W-40 or thicker -- makes 2 - 3 times difference. I replaced them on my 1985 Corolla and no oil consumption since.
Rings: Viscosity probably doesn't make a difference.
PCV valve: Replace it with an OEM one if it's stuck. I've never had issues with it on my 1985 Corolla though.
Leaks: Try to fix it.
