Which is better for a vehicle that will get 3k per year or less in a climate that ranges from 20*-100* and also tows a light trailer sometimes?

It is a '98 Jeep with a 5.9L magnum V8 that was raised on regular M1 silver cap, now has 178k. Not sure if full-syn is needed since oil will be changed once a year or so?

LOL!!! Well I keep coming back to the issue of the oil burno-off with regular M1 silver cap was close to a QT per 3k...I kinda thought dino might do better...

BUT, this is really not an issue if the vehicle is not going to get driven much...but is it a waste to use full-syn in soemthing that will NOT see a long enough OCI to warrant syn?

Also Johnny, If I decide to stick to M1, then

Should I use up the Pennzoil HM dino & Valvoline Maxlife I got for the 5.9 to replace M1 in my 4.0L Jeep, or should I exchange them and use that money as credit at Wal-mart to get a couple jugs of M1 HM to have???

I am using Trop-artic in my 4.0L and I think maybe I will keep the Pennzoil HM to try in the 4.0 and return the max-life?

Yea NightRider but the boy has to sleep well at night.

Fast, take it all back, get your credit and stock up on the Mobil 1. Then worry about the important things in life like how are we going to get those Sooners to win a bowl game.

3000 miles or one year might be overkill with any Mobil 1, unless driven short trips, etc. I would use up the Pennzoil HM or Maxlife. Either of those oils should do you for 3000 miles or one year unless short-tripped.

Well guys...I know...and when driven, it might be on a road trip, but many times it might be a short trip to the store in the snow, or started to move out of the way to work on my other Jeep...so it could get "infreqent" frequesnt short trips.

This is a mind-blank...anyway, I was doing 3-4k on M1 for the last 8 yrs on this particular Jeep cause I love it :)

if your fine with it by all means do it,your 5.9 is protected well.

For what it's worth, I just filled my 190K Accord with M1 10-30 HM. Car has run M1 10w-30 for the last few changes, usually topped off at with 1/2 qt of 15W-50EP halfway through a 7~8K OCI. (15W50EP found on clearance a while back.)

The camshaft seal weeps just enough to make piddle-spots on the driveway. We'll see if the HM 'seal conditioners' help.

There were other reasons for buying. VOAs indicate plenty of B, ZN, P, Mo, additives. The specs state a somewhat lower pour point than many M1 mixes, possibly implying 'better'

base stock. With the AZ summer coming on fast, a little higher HTHS will never hurt anything. In short, it looks like a very decent lube.

Will report if the leak improves.

I changed the cam shaft sprocket seal on my sons 96 Acord and it wasn't that bad to do . His leaked liked yours.

Yea. It's on my to-do list.

The o-rings that seal the valve cover's spark plug tubes are leaking too - I need to pull the plug wires and wick the oil every few weeks. No biggie, but worth fixing next time I get into the engine.

I just switched from regular M1 10W-30 to M1HM 10W-30 because of the higher ZDDP numbers in M1HM. Mine has the 318 and it gets very hot in the sand when driving on the beach at the Outer Banks. If I'd known about the higher ZDDP numbers before, I'd used it all along. I think the M1SUV oil has the same ZDDP as regular M1, so I can't think of any good reason to choose that over M1HM.

All of the M1 HM oils are really good. I use the 10W40 HM's in some of my classic cars.

If you are talking about the Valvoline synthetic MaxLife compared to Mobil 1 HM, it would be a tough decision. The Mobil 1 should have considerably more PAO in the base so it should handle very high heat better. If you are talking the MaxLife blend, Mobil 1 wins.

The Mobil 1 TSUV IS basically the standard M1 5W-30 with additional antioxidants, more boron, more moly, and more dispersant's. It has a 100C cSt of 11.3, HTHS of 3.09, and ZDDP in 800 class. The M1 10W-30 HM has a 100C cSt of 11.79, a HTHS of 3.66, and ZDDP in the 1000 class.

I can't get a straight answer from Mobil or Valvoline, but, I am thinking/guessing/speculating, the M1 has more seal conditioners.

The MaxLife is about $12 cheaper at Wally-World for a jug of it. I doubt there would be any discernible benefit in running the M1 over ML. But that being said, I just sprung for a jug of M1 10W-30 HM with the $10 rebate sent in...
