Hopefully this thread can consolidate discussions on this new oil (I've found various comments about it on the X3 and Porsche C40 GT threads).
Anyway, I know that most oils are "good enough for my car", but am mainly wondering what are the + and - over ESP 5W30 for my VW. After the usual Autozone deals / rebates, it is pretty much the same price. Apparently all my local Autozones still have X3, but their warehouse should have the X4.

And your VW is?

Most probably no gain at all using M1 ESP X4 0W-40 (Porsche C40 & VW 511 00 like M1 ESP X3) over running common VW 504 00/C30 just like M1 ESP 5W-30 for the vast majority of engines. Marginally higher viscosity at 100°C, marginally higher HTHS (when Virgin-like only!), but at the same time also higher Noack losses. Which advantage? I don't see it. As a matter of fact, low Noack losses are desirable, in particular for DI engines.
.

Every time I ask about oils I'm told that [x,y,z] is more than good enough for my car, so why should I pay 3x the price for HPL?

Keep using the ESP 5W-30 as long as you get it cheaply is my take. Shear and NOACK of the X4 would negate any "advantages" over the ESP IMHO.
I’m pretty sure the X3 and X4 are better oils or Porsche wouldn’t have spent the money to create them with Mobil and just used the C30 ESP 5W-30. Meaningfully better in a VW engine? Not sure anyone here can answer that.

Guess I should have clarified "advantages" with regard to a VW engine. Specifically designed with a particular manufacturer? Possibly.

What are the chemical differences between the (0,5)W-30 ESP oils vs the X3 vs the X4?
Why is there no 5W40 ESP oil?
So, my understanding is that NOACK is how much of the oil "evaporates", and ash is how much is left after it is burned? Which one do I care more about regarding intake deposits?
