You take your chances with online sales and with online videos.

The Mobil 1 filters have had several discussions of late as consolidation in the industry is changing many brands.

He might be a joke, but if this is the difference between old and new and they still charge $10 for it— it is a joke from mobil1

New filter looks nicer. It's more like the OEM filter. Less potential failure points. Easier to recycle.

You mean its good that they removed metal end caps and metal center core tube? You think this is better ? It might be ok, but it looks like OEM filter, not worth $10

The new ones are rebadged Purolator PureOne filters. The quality is good.

Mobil changed their filter supplier from Champ Labs to Mann-Hummel recently, so the website pictures may not be updated yet (and may never be).

Why would this be necessary for most cartridge type filters? The filter media efficiency, fit, and integrity during service are what’s important.

Most of other premium filters have some form of metal or plastic caps and some kind of reinforcement in the core. Its probably an overkill, but this is what people expect when they pay premium filter prices. It seems to be they just made it cheaper, but forgot to decrease the price. It looks like a lower end FRAM filter now. I would certainly not pay $10 for it.

Actually it looks like the VW/Mann filter for my Tiguan and the Hengst one I used on my BMW for years. Neither one of those have any end cap nor reinforcement. It also looks like the element inside OEM Toyota filters.

M1 has switched manufacturers and the design. Happens. If the box shows still shows the previous design then they should change that, for sure. The newest cartridge looks a lot like a standard Toyota OEM cartridge.

Appears from comments and follow up youtube, the maker has figured out or been told how to get same as previous M1 type cartridge, Toyota TRD or Amsoil. Likely same cartridge.

If I read correctly guy says he changes his oil and filter every 5k miles. At that oci/fci, the new one should be just fine. But I get, no need to pay more for M1 name.

Guy's a joke
Well, the guy is a joke sorry to say. Everything he said was his opinion not based on fact or experience.

First he had a tantrum and threw down his older style Mobil 1 filter which ruined it as you can see in the video. Secondly, how does he know the new style isn't good for 20K as Mobil 1 states.

Thirdly, He is now pushing Amsoil(nothing wrong with Amsoil at all) in his later video. I suspect he is an Amsoil dealer trying to discredit Mobil 1. Nothing against Amsoil dealers unless they are lying. JMVHO.

So this is what awaits us in future for Fram Ultra, wix XP, royal purple filters, they will make them look like $4 filters and will tell us that this is actually an improvement over prior design?

It looks like your jumping the gun on this. Why not open the filter box and examine the filter at the store before buying. I always do before I purchase MC filters for my Fords.

Saw youtube video that some M1C oil filters are now cheaply made and look like $4 cheap filter. They even have wrong pictures on amazon. Anyone have any more info on this?

Are now cheaply made?

The video is over a year old. It seems like they've been made like this for a while.

Also: Why so angry about this? I blame video games and rap music.

I used to buy m1c filters online in Walmart, they used to come with metal caps, nicely build. After this, I am going to Fram Ultra cartrige.

Topic video is ~1 year old. Something tells me rant guy might have a different perspective on the importance of the cartridge change now. At least, I'd HOPE SO! I think MrHorspwer's linked yt could help.
