There was for about 3-5 months after Katrina that Mobil put on a plain API ring withOUT the API symbol and said exactly what he said above.

And that oil was in the chain for a long time. Not that I bought a lot of Mobil 1 but that sealed the deal for me. Then their marketing and prices have kept me from buying any more.

Tomarrow whenI get home from work, the car will go up on the stands and the last of my Mobil 1 products will be drained. I kept a few 5qt jugs in the stash (the API stuff) for the snow blower and such but decided to use it up.

Our Wal-Mart has plenty of Mobil 1. Its the QS and Pennzoil product that is empty.

Castrol is also very well stocked.

There was a thread here when the "may meet certain specs" Mobil 1 oil came out with photos.

Wish the search worked better...

Take care, bill

ExxonMobil marketers (and direct served customers) were advised that allocation of Mobil 1 lubricants will take effect October 1 as a result of Hurricane Ike causing significant disruptions to supply lines to ExxonMobil Chemical's (EMC) Beaumont, TX plant. This plant produces Poly Alpha Olefin (PAO) and is the primary supplier of PAO to ExxonMobil Lubricants and Specialties (EMLS). These disruptions have reportedly forced EMC to allocate sales of PAO to EMLS, and in turn, for EMLS to place its customers on allocation of selected lubricants containing PAO.

According to marketers, the allocation is expected to last several months and impact available of virtually all Mobil 1 lubricants. Allocations are said to range from 15% to 100% based on lubricant type and package.

I can't say I noticed a shortage here. But when I went to Autozone this past weekend, they were allowing both Pennzoil Platinum and Castrol SYNTEC as replacements for their Mobil1 (+ filter) oil change deal...

I tried to order M1 ATF at O'Reilly today. When the manager called to place the order for shipment he was surprised when the distributor told him the news. None till the first of next year, they said. I'm going to buy a full change of it as soon as I find it on a shelf as this is the only M1 product I can see myself using since 2T was discontinued.

i found out about the mobil1 shortage while at costco today. was hoping to see what the deal would be with the recent coupon i got in the mail. couldn't find any mobil1 so i asked the staff and after calling around he told me the news that costco warehouses in the area (Socal) were all having a shortage of M1 motor oil. that got me to google tonight and noticed this thread on BITOG.

i've switched over to Castrol for the most part and I have some remaining stock of M1 so it doesn't affect me much. if the costco deal was good enough, i thought i might get some more for the van.

Ok, now this is gonna be a pain in the ya know where!

I was planning to change oil on girlfriends crown vic,and guess what oil we need, Mobil Clean 5000. Hopefully tomorrow night after I get home from work, they still have some left on the shelves.

I checked about a week ago, and AAP and Auto Zone had some. Now that I think of it, it wasn't well stocked. Seems the 0W-xx oils were pretty well stocked, I guess they're still catching on. I just checked the 0W-20 Mobil 1 I have and the label doesn't say anything out of the ordinary, API SM etc, meets all specs it did before, and the Star Burst.

I wonder if I should grab more???????

Sounds like a good reason to try Schaeffers or Amsoil, just pick up on the phone and a few days later it is on your doorstep...no driving/searching involved.

If it effected XOM and they are a big supplier to others, then these problems might just become industry wide?

What a bunch of whiners. Ever hear of a hurricane and supply disruption? Wow. You people are unbelievable.

As far as API approvals go, Mobil 1 has more of them and more respect among automotive engineers than any other oils on the market.

...and when XOM stops producing base oils, yes it can impact other brands such as Valvoline/Amsoil that do buy from XOM.

It's great we have a lot of choices. It's part of what makes it interesting.

Speaking of marketing, Pennzoil markets/marketed Slick 50, Valvoline still recommends 3,000 mile drain intervals and Amsoil uses a 4-ball wear test. Oh and Castrol has the torture test. LOL.

I'm afraid to inquire to Amsoil if their supplies are going to be disrupted. So far ..no "out of stock" in my dealings.

Pretty much what I was thinking. Time to get invested in PP.

Ordering Schaeffer's/Amsoil allows you to skip out on going to Walmart too.
