Hello for a friends oil change. The vehicle calls for 5w20 and it’s summer now so I assume It’s better to run 5w20 compared to a 0w20 for shear stability

I saw I can get super tech 5w20 non dexos synthetic for a few dollars cheaper then the basic Mobil 5w20 synthetic non dexos (not Mobil 1)

If it’s fine for me to get these non dexos one, is it a no brainer to get the ST?

Or should I upgrade to either 0w20 ST or Mobil since those are both dexos

I know it doesn’t matter much since there all practically the same but since I’m paying anyways, doesn’t hurt to get the better one

Thanks

5w20 being in any way better than 0w20 is unknown because it depends on the ingredients/components.

a 5w20 being "more shear stable" would only be true if "all else remains equal" and it never does.

What's the application?
What's the intended OCI?
What are the service factors, etc?
sorry didnt add vehicle as was just comparing oil to oil. its a 06 mazda 3 with a 2.3L. inteded oci 5k ish, city driving mostly

Dexos is just an approval from gm. If you pay more for that symbol on a qt of oil, your just giving it to GM for nothing. It's not an ingredient, so use what ever oil you want.,,
ty i was just wondering if a dexos would be more stout then a non dexos but i guess hard to know

The problem with this question is one of structure. If you have these oils kicking around, you can easily choose either. From my perspective, you need to consider three things: the oil weight, whether Dexos matters to you, and the brand you prefer. This would yield a good number of choices - more than two. 0w20 PUP Dexos would be my first choice as long as the price is right. The idea of changing oil weight based on season is mostly wrong, as is the notion that there is anything meaningful between 0W20 and 5W20.

Dexos is not that high a standard. Some better oils don’t have it, as it is with some lesser oils. I think of Dexos as a floor for oils, and yet nothing I put in Germancarshas it.
