Man and nature: Unusual place on the earth

We have an old open cast coal mine pit that has been turned into a lake and park very close to town. It's about 180 metres deep, and a commercial diving school uses it to train divers - no need to go offshore to find deep water, it's right in town. It has walking and mountain bike tracks, and in summer after work I ride around it on my way home. Good use for an eyesore.

I've stood on the edge of the Kalgoorlie Super Pit. It is big.

Most interesting is you can see where the old tunnels from the 19th century daylight out of the slope of the pit, now halfway between top and bottom.

I went to college in Butte, MT. The Berkley Pit is one crazy big and deep hole.

Contrary to the photo caption, there was still limited mining operations going on when I left there in 1988.
