Hey everyone,

I have a Mercedes with a V8 (non-AMG) that requires MB 229.5 spec oil. I'm located in Canada and have found two options locally on sale:

  • Mobil 1 0W-40 Euro (also labeled as M1 FS 0W-40)
  • Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40

Both meet the 229.5 specification, and from what I can tell, they cover similar certifications.

I mostly do city driving and don’t push the car hard. I'm planning to follow the MB-recommended oil change interval (around 10,000 miles), though I’m open to changing it a bit earlier. My main goal is to use the stoutest, most strong oil.

Given these options, which would you choose?

Thanks!

If you really want to keep this car for the long hall, stick with a 5000-mile OCI. You are doing city driving, 5000-mile OCI. If you were doing highway driving that would be different.

I’ve attached some photos to make the comparison easier. The approvals for both oils are mostly the same, and while there are a few differences, they don’t seem significant enough to matter for most vehicles.

I've also included images showing the specifications and certifications of each oil.

Lastly, I won’t be driving the car in winter, so the difference between 0W and 5W isn’t important in my case—apologies for not mentioning that earlier.

Of those two, whichever you can get cheaper. Are you shopping Canadian Tire? The 0W-40 has the edge if you are in Winterpeg or Edmonton where the 5W-xx Winter grade may not be appropriate.
Yes CT, sorry I forgot to add that I won't be driving this in the winter. I know M1 is spoken well on the forum so I am leaning towards that but was curious if PP was maybe 'better'. With the PP rebate, the price is essentially the same.

Not much difference between the two.

M1 0W-40 is coming out of my HEMI (It's more or less a MB V8, kinda sorta if you squint real hard) and PPE 5W-40 is going in shortly.

Mobil 1 ESP X4 0W-40 if you can get it in Canada, very well worth it. It's very good oil.

It has a new generation of cleaning agents that will keep your engine very very clean. It also cleans existing crud. I am very impressed with it.

I've been running M1 0W-40 FS Euro in my E350, since I bought it with 40k miles on it, and the car now has about 115k miles on it. And I have been following the MB 10k service interval, just like you say you are planning on doing. A few months ago, I ran a scope down through the oil fill, and everything I could see looked like a brand new engine. Absolutely no sign of varnish, let alone any buildup.

The Valvoline Platinum Euro may be a fine oil. But based upon my experience with M1 0W-40 FS Euro, I will not be changing from M1 FS Euro.

@Astro14 has also shared his experience with running M1 Euro in his Mercedes cars. I'll let him chime in and speak for himself.

I lean toward PPE 5W40 just bcs. very low Noack a d high HTHS.
But, I tracked my car with M1 to 300f temperature. So, both are exceptional oils.

Thank you for the input. However, wouldn’t M1 0W40 have a similar HTHS due to similar approvals, or was it determined that the PP has a higher value? I believe I read that M1 has a higher NOACK, though.

I also wanted to add that I went to Walmart and also saw Supertech Euro 5W40 with 229.5 Spec for only 28.88 CAD. Technically based on approval's I could also run that but would rather have the peace of mind of running M1 or Pennzoil.

Lastly, I did not know Walmart Canada also stocked the M1 0W-40 for $36 CAD. The website did not label it nicely so I was not expecting it. They also had the PP 5W40 for $39.99 CAD

No. Approvals require minimum 3.5cP. Max in MB229.5 is 4.1cP (I think).
PPE is around 3.8-3.9. M1 probably 3.7-3.8.
PPE bcs. it utilizes more GTL has lower Noack and higher HTHS. Take into consideration that this is finding needle in the haystack. However, I trust M1 more to pack whatever they promise they will pack.

What would be your pick between the three if Motul 8100 X-Cess Gen 2 5W40 could be had for the same price?
