LS2 Oil Change - Higher milage

I am looking to switch oils to make my valve train as quiet as possible. (Typical sewing machine noises)

The car currently has 123k miles. I have been using M1 Syn 5w30 with ac delco filters. (What the book recommends)

The car is daily driven in Missouri. Winters usually don't go below 0 F.

If you like M1, try changing to the 5w40 version as the higher hot viscosity should help. If you also have an oil consumption or leaks problem try their high mileage oil, but don't use it if not as it swells the seals on some engines.
For a cheaper option try Castrol GTX 10/40 or Magnetec 10/40, BUT always take a look at the Mobil 1 and Castrol oil finder guides to see what they have to recommend for your engine type.
I think the only additives that are safe and sometimes help with a defined problem are made by Liqui Moly in Germany (Lubro Moly in the US) and there is one for lifter noise, BUT is this a lifter or injection pump rattle as there is a difference?

If the change to a 5w40 does not help much, the 2 additives that might help is Ceretec for general rattle or the Hydro Stosel one for lifter/cam noise. If you have to stick with a 5w30 oil for this engine type, then their Visco stabil might help with general cold start rattle.
A one off used oil analysis (UOA) from Blackstones cost 25 dollars and is a good investment to check if your service interval is OK and if your engine has any other problems like coolant or fuel contamination. It might even help ID the source of the rattle.

If you post to Bobs can you please give the exact engine model for your car or truck and always check comments from dipsticks like myself with a spot of DYOR (Do your own research) and in particular it is useful to look at an owners site or forum for the type of vehicle involved, as they have often got some good advice to cover specific problems for a particular engine.

Which vehicle do you have?

I have a LS2 in my 2006 GTO that "had" the sewing machine noises with it's steady diet of Mobil 1 5w30.

Then I changed it over to Amsoil Z-Rod 10w30. Gone are the sewing machine noises. Purrs nice & quiet now.

I'd give Pennzoil Ultra 5W30 a shot, easy to get, usually on sale, and a great oil.

It's M1 that he's talking about...

PU is a fine oil, but won't do much to change the noises, doesn't have the boosted Zinc, Phos & Moly along with the viscosity & HTHS that the Z-Rod has.

True buddy , but it s a LS2 , I still think both would be good as another one chimed in an earlier posts , & it would be or will be an ever ending arguement too ! lol Amzoil s too would be good , as allot of other oils too , some engines will go more hand in hand with one kind of oil & not necessarely another one , We ll see what the op will put in there .

AS a little side note , I put in some PU in my VQ35DE & the engine liked it , ( wasn t shure about PU myself ) much less noise from timing chains then / M1 synthetic from Nissan dealership used since I bought the car , but would it be the same with his LS2 , I don t know . If one doesn t try it , one wont know .

Thick oil quiets better.
That said:
You will have downsides that are far more important than noise that you will still hear.

Also, note that injector noise can be quite loud - it is often mistaken for valve train noise.

I always though the smooth sewing machine noise was a good thing?

That`s what my engine sounds like,all I can hear are the injectors firing,no engine noise whatsoever.

True mechtech , but Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 s not that thick , compared to Mobil 1 5w30 , & factory suggested . ( for my engine ) I was just writing what happened .

The op s in Mo , so a Mobil 1 GM-Spec oil (10w-30 or a 10w-40 ) would be a good choice in there .

As for the injector thick noises , I know about these , used to be a big truck driver , it might also be time to clean the injectors too .

A friend of mine was having some noises with the LS2 in his Trailblazer SS while on M1. I told him to give PP a try and it made a huge difference, that engine runs very quiet now.
