I take back anything positive I've said on here about my middle child. (J/K)

2022 Kia Soul LX

He lost his car key last night and can not find it. He "thinks" the other key is in the center console, but he is not sure. In 30 years of driving my wife and I have never lost a key, not to mention two.

So step 1 is to call a locksmith tomorrow to get into the car and HOPE the other key is in the center console. If it isn't, pull the negative battery terminal (because I'm sure the alarm will start going off), and then what are my options?

Take the registration to the dealer. Maybe they can cut a key from the vin.

I’d go to a Kia dealer, give them the VIN, and they might be able to reproduce a key.
I’d worry a locksmith will try to ‘force’ open the door and leave scratches or break some thing. Cost will be close to same.

If you can't find any of the keys just hope it isn't like Volkswagen. Apparently they made it difficult to add a key or at least they used to. Apparently a customer came in with his passat and his kid lost one of the three keys to the vehicle. It was a nightmare to add one extra key.

Some locksmiths use an inflatable air bag to get the door just open enough to reach in and flip the lock on the Inside. Yeah a real possibility.

Call AAA or similar and slim jim the door. Unless things have changed drastically in the last few years there should be no damage.

As mentioned, if this was purchased new the dealer should be able to make another key.

It’s not a big deal on VW.

You order key which is cut to door/vin. They take all the keys and reprogram them . All in about $350 for keyless.

Downside not if but when you find old key it can unlock door manually however useless without a reprogram.

@PWMDMD Congrats!!! Did he find the other set? I was half expecting your son to tell you he found the keys about 15 minutes after you paid the locksmith.

He did not. He lost them hiking a mountain and yes, I made him hike the trail again looking for them. I did order some Airtags and keychain holders for Christmas!

To bring the story to a close. We also got a phone call from the town police because the little numbskull (said with love) parked the car about 18" from the curb on a small side street and emergency vehicles would be unable to pass. I explained the situation to the office on the phone and she was kind enough to give me a few hours to sort it out before towing the car.
