Kia went "kiaboom"....well almost

{snip}
I'm sure the dealer offered to do that for an insane amount (I should ask) but they said they'd rather pay me. I'm going to do the valve cover gasket for a song just on principle and not allow the dealer to upsell like this.
Quoting myself, our dealer wanted $612 to replace the valve cover gasket on a '13 Optima 2.4 NA

I will do it for $598 !
Yeah I watched a vid on the 2.0T (which looks pretty much identical?) and I'm struggling to see how the dealer reached $616.

The actual Hyundai gasket thru RA is ~$43 (although I elected for Mahle to save this girl some cash, plus putting premier parts on an engine she's trying to have replaced entirely seems kinda dumb). So, say the dealer charges $100 there.

Then I guess you'd have to add in several hours labor at ~$150 to get close, but really this looks like an hour job for an experienced tech (I don't know what book time is).

I guess I should ask if they have the actual quote just for giggles.

I expect the dealer to kick it back a couple more times with reasons they can't conduct an oil consumption test. If it's in my power I'll keep doing the requested repairs as inexpensively as possible based on principle alone.

The dealer lacks the appearance of impartiality here as they get to "sell" any repairs they deem necessary to even start the process. I don't really have a solution but anyone with a legal or analytical mind can see the apparent conflict of interest.

Nice writeup, OP.

When did the Kia Soul model start having engine failures - or did they always? I'm hoping to eventually get an early 20 teens Soul as I like them quite a bit..

Just do some research online and you'll quickly find the issues. Or just look up some past posts on this site, there are plenty.
I don't know exactly the years that were affected but there are MANY.
Honestly, I'd stay clear of any Hyunkia's from 2010-2020.
I know that others are going to respond that their Hyunkia's have gone 300,000 miles or more with no issues and that's great. But you are rolling the dice.
The engine in mine was a 2.0 MPI. That wasn't supposed to be the biggest culprit creating all the havok but it sure ended up being a dud.
The Soul was a fun little car that my wife and I loved to drive. But it wasn't worth the anxiety it created for us, wondering if it would blow up or leave us hanging somewhere on a trip. I did everything humanly possible to baby that car and it let me down.
It's ultimately your decision. Just be sure you keep receipts for EVERYTHING and check that oil every few days. There are plenty of online stories of oil just "disappearing" from one day to the next. I used to laugh, until I experienced it.
Good luck.

Dealer rates are much higher than that now. Try $200/hr. at least around here, and that might be low for dealers in general. Independents charge $150/ hr here.

I put a new valve cover gasket set on this '13 2.4 today so the owner can resume/begin the process of trying for the engine warranty.

My invoice was around $270 while the dealer wanted $612. I used a Mahle gasket kit from RA.

I wrote the date and mileage so they don't blindly try to use the vc gasket excuse again. To be fair, it absolutely was leaking and I simultaneously maintain it's disingenuous to think it could significantly affect an oil consumption test. But what do I know??????

I find it really interesting the stories I've heard regarding warranty claims for these garbage motors. The circumstances definitely change from one dealership to the next. I wasn't questioned at all with mine. Although mine didn't start as an oil consumption issue, but it definitely was a problem.
I wish you luck with it.
