K&N or Motorcraft FL-820S ?

HI--

I have a 2001 Ford F-150 and I was wondering which filter would be a superior choice for extended synthetic oil drain intervals:

K&N Gold
Motorcraft FL-820S

The K&N feels a little heavier, but the Motorcraft (purolator)has a great reputation.

Any help is appreciated!

both are great filters..k&n's filter 10-20u and flows 12-15gpm and motorcraft filters good but flows at 3-5 gpm...look at bob;s test here show k
& n flows not restrictive and motorcraft very restrictive....i use k& n on my ford 4.6 and 5.4

It would be nice to see some more evidence before assuming Motorcraft filters are restrictive. The 820 does use a silicone ADV, which Ford specifies for some engines. That's what the S stands for on the 820S number. The cross reference K&N has a nitrile valve, not silicone.

Rodger, that is true and the K&N anti-drain. valve makes an irritating clapping noise.

k&n is used along with wix in racers for there high flows along with excellent filtration...motorcraft will even tell you what gpm is rated so you choose...k&n wix amsoil are high flowing filters

I think teh lightning (5.4) uses the same filter (FL-820S, stock. That sucker is supercharged, so if the flow was insufficient, wouldn't they (Ford SVT) use something else?

motorcraft is not insufficient k&n just alot less restrictive feel free to browse this site about filters there are alot of knowledgeable info. here

boxcartommie22, It used to be that you never missed an opportunity to disparage Champion Labs and the filters they make. You ragged on them up and down.

Now, you're singing the praises of the K&N and the Mobil 1, filters made by Champion. What changed your mind?

the only thing that changed my mind was bobs test on oil filters and doing alot of other home work.i liked the way my engines run with k&n also i do alot of pit crew stuff with nhra and we use wix and mostly k&n filters for the fast flow other then that i don't use anything else by champion labs

You should be able to find Wix filters in your area quite easily, as many small auto parts stores carry them. They are sold under many different brand names including NAPA Gold, Carquest Premium and Kralinator.
