If you are applying for work, make sure all your social media accounts are clean, and free of controversial posts, pics, and such. Petty online bickering in your facebook, or something else, like discussing your illegal weekend activities with your friends, etc, can, and will cost you that good new job. It amazes me, as an employer, what some people have online, while applying for work. I use a woman, who owns a small business, checking the online presence of potential employees, before hiring anyone. Some stuff she finds, blows my mind.

I was about to hire a guy last week, he interviewed well, and had some good experience. But upon checking his social media, many huge red flags, so I passed. Several people I almost hired, before checking their social media accounts, weren't hired, after doing so.

As my kids started college, during orientation they had a mandatory meeting with kids and parents that covered a bunch of that. Pictures with drinking, comments etc.

"We can't stop you from doing that BUT we can give you advice" and they showed many examples.

I'm all for giving chances but I had one that the first hits were his arrest convictions with violence/armed issues and other stuff. I gave the information to my boss BEFORE we interviewed. They hired him anyway. Not long after he did get into altercations and I really had to fight with HR to keep the long term excellent employees that were defending themselves. Policy normally is both in altercation get fired.

Never used social media. Why the heck do I want to share with the world what I had for lunch or what I paid for a repair? It is my own business. About the only thing they can find checking on me are my patents and publications and membership on Bitog!

I'm guessing you are older, and then many don't have anything like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, etc. But younger people usually do, and some have no filter on what they post.
I have been online since the early 90s but have no time for gossips or pretenders. Plus I have always been self employed and knew I would have many thousands watching my every move sort of like @Pablo

I don't even have her check forums, just social media accounts.
I have 0 social media, but do belong to 3 forums.
This one obviously, also a motorcycle website, and boating/fishing website. If the shoe was on the other foot, and I was job hunting, wouldn't care if they checked the forums I belong to either. I don't post ridiculous things, that would be no goes to hire me.

In this day and age, everybody should have their stuff set to private anyways.

What I or other people do on their private time is none of my concern and should be of no others either. People can believe in whatever they want; I'm at work and they're coworkers, not friends. If I found out the company I applied for was a big enough creep to look at my social media then I wouldn't work for them.

There were previous topics on this forum where folks were hissing and booing when news got out about corps spying on their employee's social media.
