A little random but..
I Hate parking lot door dings. They look terrible. I hate them to the extent that I'm willing to park my car two football fields away so I can avoid oafy careless people who dont respect other peoples property. I even have my wife in this mindset.
Obviously people on this site really care about thier cars, so I wonder how many others on here go to great (some would say crazy) lengths to avoid this type of damage?

Dings can be removed for not much cost. I just had at least 75 dents removed from my Fusion that got caught in a hail storm this summer. Can't tell any thing ever happened.

I tend to park in the outskirts of a lot for several reasons, exercise being one, and trying to avoid door dings being another. And amazingly, I find that even if I park in the next county, more often than not, someone will be parked right next to me even though there are plenty of open spaces out in the boonies.

When I started dating my wife a few years back I told her its just how I have to be. It probably stems from the fact that my father bought his 79 celica supra new and sold it in 2009 with perfectly straight sheet metal. Maybe a little neurotic but if your careful you can really prevent them.

People just want to feel close to other people. It's a psychological complex. Same reason people drive in "packs" on the Interstate.

My solution is to take 2 spaces and park in the middle of no-man's-land.

If you take two spaces in the boonies I have no problem, but I despise to no end people who have nice blingy cars/trucks whatever, then take up two spaces at subway, or in front of wlamart... I have two kids, and they are young... I don't have a problem with exercise or whatever I walk around 12 miles a day at work, not overweight nor are my kids.. not lazy... but if it's raining, or no parking spaces blah....

Again if your out in no mans land protecting your investment this post isn't meant for you... it's meant for those that own the parking lots of all merchants LOL

Yes that is annoying. However door dings can absolutely ruin sheet metal, to the point where paintless dent repair won't work, and at that point the only recourse is to replace the door skins. You can spot bondo from a mile away.

I park in the outskirts of parking lots to avoid dings, and I have clear rubber edging on all my car doors to prevent dings even if the wind catches my door or I screw up and let it go at the wrong moment.

But I HATE morons who park diagonally across two spaces as if their car is better than anyone else's. If I'm in one of the Jeeps, I'll go out of my way to park straight and within the lines of a space but 1/4 inch from whatever corner of their car makes it almost impossible for them to get themselves out of the space.

Or the morons who park so close it's impossible to open your door. I've thought hard about leaving some door dings in their cars after wriggling in through another door.

LOL. And for the record, I never park in more than one spot.

I don't park next to:
2-dr sedans/coupes for reason that their doors a big.
Beat up junkies, their owners don't care and sometimes they intentionally want to ding the other cars.

I tried to park next to expensive 4-dr cars, the owners are usually very carefully open their doors.

Good point!

Add to the list any vehicle that is nicely detailed. If they take the time to keep a clean outside, they probably care about beating up the doors, scratches, etc.

There are two things that could drastically reduce the chances of getting door dings. Parking lot spaces need to be widened, and people need to be more considerate. I was with a buddy of mine one day when we pulled into a parking space at a mall. He was gathering a few things from the car before we went in so we didn't get out of the car right away. While we were sitting there, some guy parks in the empty space on the driver's side of my friend's car. The passenger in this guy's car opens his door into my buddy's driver's door so hard we both felt his car rock. These two a-holes saw us sitting in the car, but just walked away as though nothing had happened. My buddy's car was less than a year old, a car which he bought new, so needless to say he was infuriated. We both get out of the car to confront these idiots. My buddy says "hey, you just put a hellacious dent in my car." The guy had the nerve to say "$hit happens" and they started to walk away again. My buddy then tells them they can either volunteer their personal and insurance info, or he was going to call the police. I guess the guys decided they didn't want to deal with the police and they provided their info and the guys insurance company paid for the damage. I have no doubt though if we wouldn't have been there to confront these two a-holes they would've just walked away and never thought twice about the damage they'd done. So many people these days are just so effin disrespectful of others and their belongings! Unfortunately, there are laws preventing us from giving these people what they truely deserve; a good a$$ whippin!!!

The problem is that #2 is not going to happen. More and more people are "me first and the "heck" with everyone else" and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I had a similar experience in my Dakota, I was at the train station lot waiting for traffic to clear and a woman comes to the car next to me and opens her driver door into my passenger door, also hard enough to rock the truck. She just climbs in and starts to back out, meanwhile I get out to go take a look around and since her driver window was open I said "aren't you even going to pretend it was an accident?" She said "oh, nothing happened" to which I replied "since you didn't even bother to look how the "heck" would you know?" and then proceeded to point out the ding that she did, indeed make.

She muttered something and drove off, and I noticed that if I see her car in the lot lately, it's nowhere near my truck so I guess mission accomplished.

grampi, It was a good thing you were there! May have gone different if he was by himself.

I parked at my local NAPA and as my wife and I were leaving the store, a car was pulling in to park next to my truck. The car was your typical "westside special" and so were the "occupants." You guys know the type, with their underwear showing and no shirts, loud music, rotten looking car, etc. I hear BAM and look up to see the passenger getting out of the car with the car door firmly pressed upon my side door. He just looks at me and says WHAT? then walks inside, along with the driver.

Well, I had to consider several things. One, my wife was with me and she doesn't need to see me get "fresh" with the local thugs. Two, with as much as I love the fact my vehicles have very few dents, scratches, and excellent paint, I would need to calm myself to the point of NOT maiming or setting them afire, etc.

So my wife and I got into our vehicle. We had been to lunch earlier and I had a 64 oz Coke/Pepsi product sitting in the cup holder. I start up the truck, roll the window down, and remove the lid. Just about the time these guys decided to start coming out the door, I simply tossed the drink through their open window, watching the contents go splashing about through their interior. As I rolled off slowly, I looked at the guy and said WHAT?

Turns out his door hit the molding and I was able to buff out the marks for the most part. But it's the principle of it all and blatant disrespect, I guess, that really ticks me off.

Yep..Bigger problem than just dinging car doors...

Most people in general today are completely thoughtless and uncaring about other people and their property.
