I went to the Target next to my home at 10pm after wife "suddenly" remembered she wanted to get a pair of flannel pants and a Christmas tree. I went in with no problem but all the highly discounted stuff are gone. The tree was there but there was no more cart to push, and the line was probably 30 mins long. Since I walked to Target I'm not going to be carrying a tree back home without a cart, so I went home empty handed.
There were lots of people buying home appliances (most of them seems to be young couples stock up on new appliances).

I had a service call on Thursday night. (Apparently the SysAdmins in India were not celebrating Thanksgiving as this was a scheduled call.)
On my way back home, I routed myself by a local Wal*Mart at about 10pm and the parking lot was packed. Dunno what folks did inside, but it looks like a lot of folks were there.

There was nothing worth buying this year. All the items on special were available throughout the year for similar prices online or during other specials. The items my family wanted for gifts were not on sale anyhow, so it was only crowd-watching that got me out late Thanksgiving evening.
The only thing that I bought on Friday were 2 Purolator Classic oil filters at Advance.... and paid full price for them as well.
It was the lesser of two evils... either full price at Advance, or 2-3x more that that at the John Deere dealership.

I agree the deals were not that great this year. I don't want some off brand TV for about the same as a low end "regular" brand like Vizio. The tool deals were the same - de contented cordless stuff and prices not that different from other times.
We did go to Sears Thursday night to get a new freezer. Saved 5% and got bonus rewards points. The line for the electronics was crazy but we were in and out in 15 mins!
Tried to go to Target but the line was around the building so we passed. Wal Mart had a way full lot so we skipped them. Went back home, watched TV and went to bed.

Lots of drivel in thar article. We had our previous "high tech" washer from 2004 to 2011 and never an issue with its electronics. If a swere backup didn't fill it with sewer water we'd still be using it.

If the fact that the bargin basement stores were packed while the middle and upper level stores were not should tell us something. Middle income shoppers are now shopping at discount stores most because they have less money to spend. Bad sign.

Actually the WSJ had an article on this topic I mention.
They stated that we are seeing a "migration" of middle class shoppers from traditional "middle market" department stores, to the discount stores, and the main reason is money or lack of it more to the point.
Same thing with the upper middle class they have migrated downwards from a lot of premium stores to the middle tier stores and even the discount stores as well.
Bottom line is that MOST people in the US have a lot less money to spend, and that doesn't factor in INFLATION which even further erodes their buying power.
Jim Rodgers, a well known financial expert believe that the "cliff" will come in late 2013. Which might likely bring an economic depression. If QE4 (printing EVEN MORE fake money!) doesn't make it happen sooner.

The numbers are in (according to the news media). There was a 12% increase in sales over last year. I call B-S.
I was out early on Thanksgiving(8 AM) to grab something quick from walmart(forgot to grab diapers for the kid).
Suffice to say early AM, there were 3(THREE) tents pitched outside the Best Buy on the other side of the complex. It looked like the one tent had cookware and I guess they were going to celebrate thanksgiving in the tent.
Ridiculous, just order it online. I don't see what the rush is(the sales aren't even THAT good). Nobody ever wants to spend time with family, instead rush out and grab the next piece of obsolete technology thats on sale so that the person you gift it to will return it and get what they want anyway.

While I make fun of them, I will admit to participating in Black Friday shopping quite a few years ago. Way back when WalMart was opening the doors at 7:00 on Friday, there was a farm supply store near me that opened at 5:30 AM that had a turkey fryer on their sale list. I went in, grabbed one, and was the first to check out. I still remember that my receipt had a time-stamp on it of 5:30 AM. The store was really close to my place of employment and after I made my purchase I went right to work.

I started shopping at 3 PM friday afternoon and i didn't see many people at all. I stopped by lowes to get a shelving unit that was $30 off, they had six left. I see they're on sale through today i might go get another one. (Made in USA i always try to buy two when i see that) On the way back home i stopped by the gun shop and picked up some pmags but that was it for me.

I'd bet that overall sales have been DOWN.
Just from my own personal observations, there are really NOT a lot of outstanding "deals" around this year compared to other years, especially in electronics. A lot of the low price leaders are from no name brands not even the decent house name brands from Best Buy and Vizio.
