The number by itself is meaningless. How much is spent on a non-black Friday weekend? This total has to include non-gift purchases. So what do folks spend on a regular weekend/daily sales? How does that compare with what is spent on this weekend.

The total number is meaningless. What would tell the story is how much more than say the weekends leading up to Black Friday for comparison.

I.E. if folks normally spend $100/person on average during a weekend and on this weekend, they spend $200/person, then actual gift shopping is the other $100/person.

We sponsor a local child for each of our children. So we will be shopping for three kids outside our home this year.

We make donations in lieu of gifts to the adults. Stuff like Heifer International and what not.

We have enough stuff, so we give to others during this season.

A bit of clarification to my terse remark; I prefer to dispense my giving throughout the year as "the need" arises and it is my time and knowledge, not just my $ Over the years I have purchased and set up several computers for people who need them (used w/Ubuntu), fixed computers, and purchased AAA memberships. I find these are much more practical uses of my time and $ are appreciated way more than buying a bunch of junk that everyone got thru the year without anyway. I'd rather satisfy a need than a desire.

The people directly around me are very fortunate also, and we are thankful just to be able to get together and share each others time.

That being said, you will never find me camped out for days trying to acquire the latest electronic device; no one I know even operates @ that level.

Or newly wed that postpone furnishing their place till black Friday. This is the kind of people I see all over Target that day, with cart full of blender, microwave oven, TV, bedding, etc.

It only take a few large appliances to reach $800.

May be you are right and indeed average family did spend that kind of money. Well, at least we covered for four households

Everybody has to pitch in to get this economy going. Shame on you if you did not do your job by spending at least $800 this Black Friday. You are the "takers".
