I have a Hyundai Sonata with the 2.4 4 cylinder engine and I was wondering what oil Hyundai motors seem to like the best. I usually do the 3k OIl change and most of my trips are 5-10 miles during the week with Highway driving on the weekends. I use Valvoline Nextgen 5w20 in it now since I got some for 10.50 for 5qts with a coupon. I was thinking about going down to a 0w20 though since winters in Northern IL get pretty chilly and my drives are so short. What do Hyundai motors typically do best with. I heard the manual calls for QS but I dont really care for them but if its best for my car then I will use it. Thanks!

I have a 2.4 in my Kia and it seems to do fine with the recommended 5w20, I've posted a few used oil analysis. I've used Quaker State Ultimate Durability but not Quaker State Conventional.

5-20 in the warmer months and 0-20 in cooler months should work fine--you could also go 0-20 yearound, but it would have to be a synthetic--depends on your cost tolerance

I use 5w30 in the summer and will be using 5w20 in the winter. You can pretty much use what you want but I would recommend a synthetic for DI engines. Particularly ones with a low NOACK volatility, Synpower is low, Ultra is pretty good. I guess it is up to you if you are doing 3/3's but it is just a preference and opinion.

Thanks for the input so far. I was thinking about doing a synthetic and doing 5k changes instead or maybe 6k. SInce I have an extended warranty through Car max I was trying to stick with the 3k thing so they couldnt try to say anything if I needed to use it. I was looking into the Bosch Distance Plus filters becuase with the Sonata I want to make sure I have a good filter on there since the engines in these seem to be particular about that. I would get the Hyundai one but the dealer is not that close to me so it wouldnt make sense.

I will probably look into running 0w20 all year round and see if it helps smooth out the engine and increase some MPG's too. I like the idea of using less oil and going synthetic.

just do your oil changes with whatever the car calls for with api cert. and manufacter rec. oci and the warranty will cover you. I promise.

I highly recommend the Bosch Distance Plus. I am using it with no discernable difference compared to the OEM filter. They are both well built filters, but I think the D+ 3312 is a more efficient filter.

kia recommends 5w20 but the manual also says use an oil that goes with the temp of the season...and shows the wt chart..neighbor will use 5w30...so kia says its ok to use and oil other then 5w20...i suggest to him to use a a5/b5 oil such as mobil 1 5w30 extended perform full synthetic oil..

I ordered up 3 Bosch Distance Plus filters over the weekend with some Castrol Edge Oil only cost me 24.99 for oil and filter. SO now I have some stock so that I am covered for a while. I dont know if I will use the Castrol for the Hyundai or go with some Quacker state. I will use the Costrol for some other cars I do on the side.
