Well, I have decided to run PP in my two vehicles. Decided to run 5w20 in winter and 5w30 in Summer. Long story. I have excellent UOA from the 5w30 PP on my 2006 Corrola already. Hope the Kia follows suit. But both vehicles spec or allow 5w20 as well. But that's not the question.

Money is not really an issue, but M1 at $6 or more is just unjustifiably higher priced, so its almost principle to avoid it.

My local O'Reilly's has PP 5w30 at 3.99 and then you get the 5th quart free, when you buy 4. That works out to $3.33, which seems to be a pretty decent deal.

Assuming I use 11 quarts per year of the stuff, any reason not to lay up say three years worth, or 33 quarts?

No, they DON'T have the 5w20 at that price

I mean, further out that 3 years I am not willing to try and predict. But 2-3 years, that's not so crazy, right? And the price is pretty good, right?

Not a good deal. You can get PP at AAP for 2.89 per qt and they seem to have this sale quite frequently.

Also oil gets better and better, so you would not want to stock up and have a formula change.

I agree. I really like 5-30 PP, but, I buy it for 1.99 with coupon and after rebate. I drive two cars a total of over 60,000 miles/ year, so, I have to buy the limit of 6 every quarter that comes around to try and stay up with my OCI's!

Respectfully disagree on that.

Yeah, the 2-4-1 deals at AAP have been pretty frequent, but at $3.33/QT you have a great price on an oil that will easily go 7500 OCI. Compared to M1, Castrol, Valvoline and just about all the other "synthetics" at $5.68 on up to $7.00-plus/quart, PP is a great deal.

Buy what you need for a couple of OCI, watch for the 2-4-1 deal to return, and then grab it. Don't sweat stocking up against a possible future miracle advance in PCMO. Maybe the oils will get better, maybe they won't, but there's no point at which PP won't protect YOUR particular present-day engine beyond the point that the rest of the car falls apart.

Watch also for the QuakerState TorquePower and the Advanced 4X4 Synthetic in the clear bottles (Also from QuakerState) to go on sale in 5W20 and 5W30. All are great GroupIII synthetics and will go the distance for half the price of all the others. I have no idea why Pennzoil is being so generous, but grab it while you can. $3.33 is a nice price, again, especially when you compare the 5.68-7.00 price tag on all the others.

You ARE extending your OCIs beyond 3 or 5K, right? If you're dumping that Platinum at 3K out of a new Toyota, I want the "old" oil!

Yep, both the AAP and PB sales are pretty decent. I'm up to 33 qts of 5W-20 now. I wish O'Reilly's had the 5W-20, but I stopped in last week and they have to special order it...no thanks. But the 5w30 price is pretty good...that amounts to 5 qts for $15.96, a full $4.00 less than Wal-Marts 5-qt jug "everyday low price".

Well, current price for PP at AAP is $5.88 No doubt there have been great sales in the past, but will there be more in the future? With PP getting a lot of good press and M1 getting some negative publicity. I don't know.....

As for rebates. Yes, I know, a better deal might come along. But I hate rebates..... I am willing to do them, just bear in mind that after the extra taxes (you pay about 10% local sales tax here in MO on that extra you paid before rebate), plus stamps, and hassle, the rebate $$ had dwindled some....

But you are problably right. I should not go for 3 years worth. Maybe just for this year and next. I like running the same oil and watching the UOA etc. And running the same stuff in both vehicles would be a plus......

O'Reilly's may be able to order the 5W-20 for you. Nothing wrong with building a nice stash with a good oil.

They CAN order it for you, but it's not at the special price...it's the full shebang.

On a happier note, I just picked up another 6-pack (of PP...not beer) at the sales/rebate price at PB that'll end up at $1.99.

So now that's 33 qts...at 40K miles/year and say 8K oci, that's 5 changes per year, times 4.5 qts/change = 22.5 qts per year. So I guess I have about 1.5 years for now.

Wonder if I can resist future sales?

Nah, how can you resist?

Where's your wife at with all this oil stashing, Lou? Or are you in the closet, so to speak?

Well, I got a dirty look today when I gave her the PB receipt. I told her to get over and get used to it...because I AM the Master of My Domain!!! Told her to expect it to continue...

You drive 40,000 miles a year?

Probably right about that, give or take 2-3K. I drive 100 mile RT every day to work, plus a few road trips for business per month, plus a little driving on the weekends.

So if you were doing 3K changes, there'd be a serious amount of oil flowing through that motor. . . .

PP 5-30 on my Subaru's at 8000 mile UOA looks as good as the average 4600 mile UOA on other cars...according to the Lab. For my cars and my kind of driving, PP will do 10,000 miles with no problems.

Gads -- LouDawg was right. Comes to about $3.20 per quart. 16/5 --- Must be getting senile. Better just take the vehicles to JiffyLube and start looking for a retirement community........

Do a UOA before stockpiling.

I see the $3 level for group 3 sale syn as the usual for the next three years with more group 3 capacity and players. I still haven't paid over $2 for PP after rebate since its been released while I assume its buying market share from M1. I only stockpile enough so I can weather a month or two where there aren't any cheap sales on syn.
