How many of you are STILL ST users?

My wife's sonanta has had nothing but ST 5w20 in it since 2008 after my 5 free oil changes from the dealer ran out. Been doing 5k oci ever since with zero problems. Just rolled over 140k miles and still purring like a kitten.

There is nothing wrong with ST products.

Im not a makreting major or even work in a marketing department but the whole Supertech thing has got me thinking and it really is funny because this theory works.

Supertech never has commercials or coupons or sale ads so the money they save eacj year in advertising puts them ahead of the major brands that sponsor race cars and buy commercial time.

The bottle and label are plain and to the point without fancy writing many colors or pictures of a famous person...all of which cost more money.

At this point by the time they put product into the bottle Valvoline or any major brand is already hudreds of thousands of dollars down...so even when the same product is put into both bottles Valvoline has to charge more becuase they have a higher cost.

Also people think that a product that costs more is a superior product because how can someone make the same thing cheaper its mind blowing...but they forget about marketing costs and whatnot..so my point is Supertech and Valvoline CAN have the same product but Valvoline to make a profit has to charge more

I like to highlight CAN because I am not by any means saying they DO but its all a marketing game...Supertech can pass savings off to the consumer by not shoving their product down your throat while Valvoline flaunts itself and charges more and so you figure it has to be better...just my two cents from my psychology background

A gasoline engine will only go 500,000 miles and a Diesel 1,000,000 on Supertech. I would pick something with a better record.

4X4 Chevydude makes some very good points.I admit that I have thought about using something besides ST for the next oil change. It seems that we get into the 'name brand has to be better' thinking when there is really no proof of such.

We have seen name brand UOA's and they are usually good.We have also seen ST UOA's and they are good.

The question now is,if the ST shows as good results as the name brand, which it does seem to do,then why get a name brand?

It seems that we are influenced by shiny colors with pictures of some celebrity to the point that some would buy tap water sold in a bottle as a special water at a high cost.Wait, they already do.

I am not trying to offend anyone,I am only saying that sometimes we get influenced by things that dont have anything to do with the actual product we want,we see the shiny colors and the picture of some person and many automatically think that it has to be better than the others.

Some here may say that this oil or that oil has more additives than ST,that may be true but are those extra additives really needed, especially for the normal OCI's that auto makers call for?

IS more of additive 'A' going to make an oil better than an oil that might have less of the same additive? What I am saying is this, does the extra 'A' make the oil better or is it just adding to the expense of the oil? Some here may say that this is not a correct way of thinking and that an oil company wouldnt do such,or would they?

Some may say that oil companies put millions of dollars of research into the additives in the oil, that may be true but that doesnt mean that they dont do things to increase the expense of the oil in the process.

Many seem to have the idea that more has to mean better.

While I haven't bought any ST in some time, I'd use it or similar in my Granada with no worries.
Last time I bought some it was still Tech 2000.

ST is the cheapest at my WM, with QSGB and Mobil Super being very close 2nd and 3rd. I, like many others, have used this oil in the past with absolutely no problems. I still hesitate because it is a bit of an 'unknown'. I know it produces good VOAs and UOAs (I'm a big believer in Moly), but the QSGB is right beside it and I know the stuff in the Green Bottle is bullets.

Having said that, I have 2 cars coming up on their 6 month OCIs this month. I've been thinking about using ST 5w30 in one of them: a 1992 Saturn that I drive to work. I also found a ST 3614 oil filter in my garage the other day (no idea when/how I got it), so I'll be using that as well... What the heck.

Big time ST user. Been hooked on the stuff for years since my first car. Back when it was $7 a jug I fell in love. But what they charge now isnt too bad considering the market today. I just finished up a year long OCI on their "synthetic" in my Toyota. Ran great and Ive got a quart and a half in it now. The wear #'s Ive seen on UOA's have always been amazing just like Valvoline. Truely an underrated product.

The mother's 93 Celica has seen ST Synthetic 5W30 for 7.5kish OCI's for a few years now. There's really no reason to even think about spending $$$ on the car at this point, It's is essentially falling apart anymore and it's nearly time for her to get a new one. Although, I wouldn't mind loading up anything else she drives with the stuff, she's such a grand-ma driver I can't imagine she's pushing the stuff even on 7.5K changes.
